Album Notes

Please see other recordings by Emily & Al Cantrell as "The Cantrells"

"Under a Southern Moon", Al and Emily's first recording together, features a collection of their favorite older songs, and one new song "Riddle of the Fiddle" by Jim Schulz.

Subsequent CDs featured Emily as songwriter.

"Under a Southern Moon" was recorded mostly live in the studio with this "dream band", with Jim Rooney engineering, recording to 2" analog tape. Emily accompanied herself on her Martin D-18; Al played fiddle and mandolin. It was originally released as an LP record.

REVIEWS/Under a Southern Moon

Cash Box Magazine:

"If you have been longing to hear some genuine, acoustic country music performed the way it used to be...then, look no farther than this excellent album. True country fans around Nashville have given great conversation reviews to this product. I can see why. It is the most honest and unpretentious album I have heard in years. Emily and Al team up on the vocals with some well-known musicians on the tracks...Fred 'Too Slim' Labour (upright bass), Bela Fleck (banjo & guitar), and 'Ranger Doug' Green (Western baritone) to do some great name-dropping. Great songs, too. Remember 'My Adobe Hacienda' and 'Slow Boat to China'? They're here along with other greats."

Billboard Magazine:

"An airy, inventive, all-acoustic treat that revives such ancient pop and country hits such as 'On a Slow Boat to China,' 'In My Adobe Hacienda,' and 'I Heard the Bluebirds Sing.'"

Music Row Magazine:

"A warm, nostalgic trip that meanders through Western swing, bluegrass and spirituals. The duo -- Emily sings beautifully and plays a solid rhythm guitar, Al alternates from sweet fiddle to haunting mandolin -- prefer older songs, drawing from Sons of the Pioneers, Pee Wee King and traditional folk songs that travel from Mexico to Montana."
