Album Notes

Captain Audio was the former band from Josh and Brandon of the SECRET MACHINES and Regina from CHAO

Captain Audio started off in 1997 as a lo-fi, 4-track, living room project between vocalist/guitarist Regina Chellew, who was a touring member of Scottish pop band Ruby (Sony, Creation U.K.), and drummer Josh Garza, who had just left the influential drone quartet Comet (Dedicated).

" Like the Flaming Lips playing on the wing of a 747...an amazing record" Dallas Observer

They quickly evolved into a full-on aural onslaught with the addition of former UFOFU (Medicine) bassist/vocalist/keyboardist Brandon Curtis.

"Futuristic pop, music so thoroughly modern that it sounds like tomorrow, ambitious and edgy." Allmusic.com

The group has garnered a reputation as unpredictable performers able to turn the standard live rock show into an episodic and breathtaking experience.

"Gorgeously unpredictable, a grandiose sonic montage as good anything conceived by Phil SPectre, an impressive outing from a band hat has done nothing but impress." FW Weekly

In all my illustrious career as a music critic, I've never given this high a rating. OK, the music sucks. But the 4 star rating is in hopes that Regina does too. If not.....1 star.

Traversing the path of greatness...

The first ep by Captain Audio is an aural experience. I adore Brandon Curtis's vocals, so even though lyrics like "we don't need a door cos we'll rise up through your bedroom floor" ("Driving, Riding") are a bit uninspired, the deliverance of the words compensates for their weakness. The band's experimentation, however, deserves merit. There's more than a dash of early Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips here, but that's definitely not a bad thing. Secret Machines fans might be a little put off at how different it is from that sound, or even of the previous Comet, UFOFU and Tripping Daisy (Ben had a bit of dabbling with Captain Audio, mind you), but if you can find it cheap, you'll enjoy Brandon's voice and Josh's tight drumming anyway. Also, look for a copy of the Captain Audio full-length "Luxury or Whether It Is Better to be Loved Than Feared" which takes the diamond-in-the-rough sounds of "My Ears Are Ringing But My Heat's Ok" and polishes them into a real gem.
