Album Notes

Captain Genius is here to save the world!

"Part Fountains Of Wayne, part early Weezer, early Supergrass and Nada Surf and plenty of new wave power poppin` charm! The band dole out instantly digestible melodies; short and tuneful solos; bottom-heavy distorted Starting with crunchier-than-Pringles guitar chords, the band hurtles into a grungy sing-along with big sounds, bigger hooks and more than a handful of very memorable poppin` tunes."
- NotLame.com Staff Review

"...ahead of the power-pop-rocking pack... constantly surprises the listener..."
- NoHoLA news magazine

"Power pop the way it's supposed to be... a cool delight."
- Santa Monica Mirror review (best of 2002)

L.A.'s Captain Genius gets its unique sound from a blend of melodic power-pop, old school rock and roll, and a hint of roots music. CG lives somewhere between Fountains of Wayne and Wilco, and around the corner from Matthew Sweet and Weezer.

Matthew Stephen Young, the band's singer/guitarist offers clever, vulnerable and sincere lyrics to the band's powerful sound. Bassist Kevin Danczak and drummer Chris K. provide a super-tight backbeat while keyboardist David Keeton adds lush organ and piano parts, as well as groovy space-synth sounds. CG's dynamic debut cd gives the listener ten very catchy, rockin' pop songs. Enjoy.

What's not to like? Spaceheater & Pop Song are both particularly good songs (that will get stuck in your head), but my favorite is Super Villain. This one's for the DC fans.

Captain Genius. I was fortunate enough to stumble across this band during a recent Southern California trek, and at their CD release party, I snagged a copy, hoping for a fun disc I would spin a few times. Little did I know I would find a new favorite. The album starts out with the catchy tune Space Heater, in which Matt, et. al set the tone for the listening experience -- keepin us toasty and warm. Lemonade and Pop Song push the album further along, keeping the pace. CG begins to shine, in my opinion, however, with the tune Let's Go For A Drive, with it's honest and relaxed lyrics. Super Villian provides laughs, and then we are pulled back down with the gut-wrencing Stunt Driver. True Story illustrates some of the darker truths of stardom. Designer Drug has a catchy tune, while retaining the harsh honesty of the album. Dance and Good For You round out an EXCELLENT album. We can surely expect great things from Captain Genius in the future!

A fun, upbeat pop-rock masterpiece!

"Captain Genius is here to rule the world!" And that they will do! Drawing you in instantly with it's enthousiastic, lively tracks - like "Space Heater" and "Pop Song" - and melodic balads - like "Good For You" - this album is nothing less than an infectiously fun, pop/rock masterpiece! Matt Young's vocals and "Beach Boy-style" back vox (delivered by Adam Busch and Eric Kufs) combined with creative and humerous lyrics, make singing along a fun and quite contageous experience. With their incredible upbeat sound and sencier lyrics, this band is a true pop-rock wonder with a punk twist. There is no question, this album's clever sense of humor and diverse sounds are sure to please music fans of all kinds!

The lyrics are clever, the melodies exceedingly catchy, and I'm really loving these keyboard parts in the background. A fine little disc, this. (Be sure to hit the CG website and check out the video for "Let's Go for a Drive.")
