Renato Caranto is a jazz musician and the tenor saxophone is his instrument. In addition to the tenor he may use soprano or alto as he works his way through a variety of playing styles including jazz, blues, funk, R&B, and even a little country. He has gained much experience over the years as a professional musician. He started his career at age 15 by performing with his father in a swinging big band in his homeland of the Philippines. His restless desire for a better life coupled with his strong work ethic eventually landed him a spot with a popular band that toured through many countries before reaching the United States in 1981. From 1981 to 1992, Renato joined various top-40 groups playing in the lounges of major hotel chains up and down the West Coast.
January 1992 is notable for his transition out of the top-40 and into a local blues band. Since that time, Renato has utilized his strong work ethic to firmly establish himself in the Portland jazz music scene. He has performed in several major festivals in the area including the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, the Waterfront Blues Festival, and the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival. He has also recorded on dozens of CD projects in whole or as a featured soloist.
1994 was a big year for Renato. He signed with a local independent label and recorded his debut album, "Blues For Ama". He also was the recipient of the Cascade Blues Association's "Muddy Award" for best saxophone player. Renato has garnered the "Muddy Award" an additional five times while playing with numerous local and national blues acts.
In 1999, Renato completed his second CD, "Generations". His third CD "Straight Ahead" was released for a limited run in 2002 to rave reviews. His fourth album "Nice To Be Home" was released in August 2006 by Portland based jazz label Diatic Records. It features Renato with Mel Brown, Gordon Lee, Thara Memory, Andre St. James, and Stan Bock.

I dig it.

I had this disc for about a year now. It's kind of hard to write something objective when you have so much respect for the musicians that appear on this recording. What I really dig about this disc is its understated class and hipness. I attribute it to the overall musical and spiritual maturity of the musicians.
There's not so much of soul-searching as in the "Body & Soul" from Mr. Caranto's "Straight Ahead" -- there's, perhaps, some light-hearted sadness, as in the new rendition of Mr. Lee's "Cherie's Garden." Thara Memory's blues solos on "Charlie Parker's Last Supper" and psychodelic licks on "Just Passing By" are prophetic and give me chills.
The recording itself is very well mastered, the sound is very wide and bright. It's interesting to note how masterfully musicians accompany the leader on this recording and kind of hang in the background. I think this comes from a sensible musical intuition, as the same trio - G. Lee, Andre St. James, and R. Caranto sound completely different on the recordings of Mr. Lee as a leader. Peace.
