Album Notes

Carlos Oliveira, with his rhythmically dynamic guitar style as well as his tropically rich compositions, introduces his listeners to a new world of festive and emotional music...Oliveira hails from Recife, a city in the Northeastern part of Brazil. This area is especially rich in African influences, and is a source of a unique regional music, which has greatly influenced Brazilian music as a whole. Deeply affected by his exposure to American jazz, Oliveira moved to the US to expand his contact with the music, further his studies in composition and arranging, and expand his performance possibilities. One of the most highly-regarded musicians of the Bay Area Brazilian community, Carlos Oliveira has performed with and/or recorded with Claudia Villela, Claudia Gomez, Andy Narell, Sandy Cressman (Homenagem Brasileira,) Celia Malheiros, Eddie Duran, Ricardo Peixoto, Mike Marshall, Jeff Linskey. He is a first-call musician for countless recording projects; this versatile player is also an expert bassist and percussionist.

I purchased several copies of Carlos\' CD with Harvey and gave one to my favorite spot, CUCURU, in Colorado Springs. It has become a great favorite of the clientelle that frequent CUCURU, a delightful Latin American Cafe and art gallery. I need to buy some more to sell in the cafe. I have also sent \"Brazilian Origins\" to Bill Kopper, a wonderful guitarist in Boulder,Colorado, who has played many gigs with Robert Kyle from Brazil Camp, and am hoping that he will \"spread the word\" about this great CD. I am a big believer in promoting CD\'s of this calibre to people and favorite clubs that will play the CD and get others to buy it. Thanks to Carlos and Harvey for creating such an exciting and innovative CD.

Bravo to Carlos and Harvey for another great contribution to modern Brazilian music. I listened to all of the tracks many times over and over again, and I want to play all of these great tunes. I particularly like "Nova Um" and its opening percussion. This CD is one of those haunting compilations that makes you want to listen to it over and over again. Anne Lenoir Ramler

When I saw the discreet attachment to Carlos'CBC post today, I clicked onto it and accidentally discovered his CD. I love it and will buy it immediately. I have heard Jovenos Netos and other people talk about the music of Northeast Brazil and have been curious to hear more. Harvey, I immediately recognized your clarinet playing as well. I love this music and will treasure your CD, Carlos. I know that you and Harvey are trying to "expand" to a higher level of jazz, as is many great Brazilian artists who come to the USA and then to to the Berkeley School of Music. I appreciate all of your hard work, but I personally am starting to feel "pushed" too hard by everybody who trying to sound so "jazzy". I just came from a gig with some friends of mine who play regularly at CUCURU, a Latin American cafe and art gallery. They accidentally got into a Bill Evans and Thelonious Monk mood and I left early. Carlos, I agree that your CD is "very Brazilian", and I do love it. I think I am jealous that I can barely play choros, while you guys are are plowing leaps and bounds through this jazz that I will never be able to play.

This CD is a very enticing blend of rhythms from the Brazilian Northeast that Carlos browsed, as he belongs to this cultural root. If you want to get in touch with the essence of this music style, you must have this CD.
