If you like haunting, poignant, atmospheric and sharply satirical songs, you'll love Steve Carlson's latest release, PleasantVille. With ten original songs and a distinctive rendition of the late, great Dave Carter's Hey Ho rounding out the roster, PleasantVille leaves the listener with the impression that a snapshot of America is at hand: a snapshot taken through the eyes of a tender cynic with a prophetic voice. Need a second opinion?
Several years ago TimeOut London music reviewer Ross Fortune described Carlson's songs as, "tough, plangent and twisted contemporary American folk flavored rock songs, infused with a subtly intelligent and deeply individualistic air of dark humour and wised-up desperation". Whew! That's a mouthful!
With Carlsons extraordinary lyrics and appealing voice, combined with the deft and stylized production from Tom Fabjance and Jordan Grunow at Duluth, Minnesota's Sacred Heart Studio, PleasantVille is an experience that you won't want to miss.

This is a fantastic CD that both my mother and I can listen to. We have such different tastes that it's rare to find something we both like and can listen to again and again.

I'm so happy that I stumbled upon this CD. Mr. Carlson's music is quite refreshing. Sorry Sons A Bitches totally cracks me up. My favorite song though is Living Without; it's one of the best songs that I've ever heard.

This is a fascinating collection of songs, good music and sharp, literate lyrics.
"A Hell of a Time" is a terrific Christmas song with a bite: "It must be a thankless job, it must be kind of lonely, being the Prince of Peace..."
It's also interesting that Steve Carlson lives in the Wisconsin Northwoods - where I live as well - obviously there's something in our clean air!

The cover of Hey Ho is outstanding, but listen to the rest of the album and you'll discover a lyricist that rivals the many great talents in folk today. Molly's Eyes, Bard Extraordinaire and Pleasantville are my favorites.
