Album Notes

Andrew Carney

Andrew began playing trumpet and flugelhorn professionally at the age of 15 (1979).
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from California State University, Los Angeles. Although he plays, writes, and arranges many styles of music, his first love is Jazz. He performs locally in the Los Angeles and Orange County California area as well as jazz festivals throughout the country (Sun Valley, Idaho, Park City,Utah, Coos Bay, Oregon, Sisters, Oregon). In 2004 he will be traveling to Torino, Italy to perform with vocalist Yve Evans. In addition to live performances, you may have heard Andrew playing in television commercials for the Los Angeles Times, Nutra Systems, AM/PM Mini Markets, or perhaps even an episode or two of the Saturday Morning cartoon, "Spiderman". He has had the pleasure of performing with such artists as Dionne Warwick, Whitney Houston, Wayne Henderson, Bobby Lyle, Chaka Khan, Brenda Russell, and Randi Crawford. Andrew has lent his talents to many CD projects over the years. From Gospel to Rap, Straight Ahead Jazz to House music. His first solo CD as a bandleader, "Home Again", is now followed by his latest release entitled, "Playtime".

Soul-stirring jazz, hearts sing as Playtime makes a joyful noise!
author: Judi Smith
Andrew Carney's Playtime makes a joyful noise capturing the hearts of listeners with his sweet soul-stirring clarity on the trumpet and flugelhorn. The title song, Playtime, written by Carney, is jazz at its best. Highlighting his ability to sweeten the notes, is Over the Rainbow, as mellow as it gets and touching the heart. BZ, Ciao, Grand Theft, and Backstage, also Andrew Carney penned, show the brilliance and artistry of his musicianship. Yve Evans vocal rendition and keyboard playing of Jesus Loves me is unsurpassed, taking a well loved childhood hymn and turning it into a work of art with Andrew's help, and making it a very special production. The musicians that play on this CD are consummate professionals without exception. Tony Campondonico is outstanding on piano and keyboards, as are Kevin Axt, acoustic bass; Alex Al, electric bass; Doug Mathews, drums; Land Richards, drums (BZ and Backstage) Mike Smith, percussion (BZ and Backstage) Justo Almario, tenor saxophone (Grand Theft and trading on Oleo) Jeff Jorgenson, tenor saxophone (solo and trading on Oleo) and Rick White, acoustic guitar. In my opinion, this is a must-have CD for jazz lovers that enjoy superb music of the highest quality performances. I highly recommend Playtime and Andrew Carney!

A great follow-up album to his debut "Home Again". Andrew has taken the next step in his development as a world class recording artist. From the upbeat title track to the stirring rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to the timeless "Jesus Loves Me", the sound is polished and professional. Andrew and the production team are to be commended for a first rate collection. I will be getting additional copies for friends and family!

It doen't get better than this !!! Who needs sax?
author: Yve Evans
I love this cd. I've played it continually since I acquired it. I have followed this man's career since the early years and I just don't see how he can be better...but I am surprised and delighted with each new recording and every single live performance. Andrew Carney's use of silence and careful yet carefree treatment of the material demonstrates knowledge of his instuments and love for the music and it's lyrics. This cd sounds as if it was custom made for a world that has long awaited that moment in music that leaves an indelible mark on the heart. I am anxiously anticipating another musical encounter with Andrew Carney.
