Album Notes

Carole Martin returns with her new CD Pieces of Dreams (The Artists' Quarter Records / 2004), her first recording since the late 1960's. A Torch Singer's Torch Singer, Carole applies her straight ahead alto with reverence and care to standards like "Don't Misunderstand," "Embraceable You," "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "I've Got You Under My Skin." Working as a six-night-a-week singer, Carole raised a family with her voice at venues like the Point Supper Club and the Mar-Key Club (where she recorded live albums), the Radisson, the Artists' Quarter, The Dakota and many other Twin Cities venues. Although she stopped making a career of singing in the early 1980's, Carole's emotional treatment of songs continued to provide a welcome mat to the stand from Twin Cities musicians at places like the AQ and the Sofitel. With Pieces of Dreams, Carole not only makes a "comeback," she has never sounded better. Packed houses at the CD release shows for Pieces of Dreams were treated to a pure singer, and a first-class stage professional, at the top of her craft. Those audiences responded with ovations and love. Joining Carole on her new release are Irv Williams (sax), Gary Berg (harmonica), Kenny Horst (drums), Tom Lewis (bass) and Peter Schimke (piano).

I'm fairly new to jazz - I heard excerpts from this on Minnesota Public Radio, and I was blown away by the rich, smokey quality of Carole Martin's voice. She does not disappoint!

Carole Martin’s alto has warmth and character, like fine brandy to be savored sl

Joining Martin on the recording are some of the Twin Cities’ finest instrumentalists, pianist Peter Schimke, bassist Tom Lewis, tenor legend “Mr. Smooth” Irv Williams, harmonica master Gary Berg, and drummer, producer and AQ owner (and Carole’s son-in-law) Kenny Horst. For this recording, the Artists Quarter stage served as studio—so the ambience and sound come through like a night at the intimate club, minus the smoke and background chatter. Particularly in her lower register, Carole Martin’s alto has warmth and character, like fine brandy to be savored slowly, filled with nuance and romantic spirit.

Truly from the heart! Loved it!

I really enjoyed this recording. Carole sings these tunes with the emotion of someone who truly loves the music. Vocally, there is a warmth and ease which makes her a pleasure to listen to. The band is first-rate. I will listen to this one over and over.
