Album Notes

Caroline’s Capuchin has always defied convention. Their music has the elegance and passion of Jazz, the groove of Funk, the percussive magic of Latin and the hard-edged distorted sounds of rock wrapped up into a 4-piece package. Their live performances are a paradox for any audience as the music swirls out in intense sheets of dramatic profundo and are punctuated with light-hearted improvisation and repartee.

Formed in December ’04, they have evolved from the Jazz/Drum ‘n Bass music found on their self-titled debut EP into the massive sound you can hear on their new album ‘For What?’ which includes a full sized percussion section, electronic drum samples and heavily modified bass and keyboard sounds.

The 11 tracks on the new album ‘For What?’ display the band’s ability to perform a variety of styles and the music provokes the full gambit of emotions. From the African drumming on ‘Countdown To A Familiar Face’, the 70’s funk on the hidden track ‘Theme From Bagnutt’, subtle jazz melodies on ‘For What?’ and fast paced Drum n’ Bass on 'Cairo Dead & Breakfast’ the listener is truly moved and grooved through a turbulent flight that spans the world and the musical spectrum.

The band’s expansive fan base talks about Caroline’s Capuchin’s live show as if it were legend already. Caroline's Capuchin never fails to impress on stage often incorporating impressive light shows with spine tingling performances. If you're lucky enough to be in the audience and have the presence of mind to look around you then you will see silent smiles in the darkness and possibly a laughing tear. Very few bands manage to evoke such responses from human beings with the pure passion they have for the music they play.

'For What?' is the long awaited, self financed debut album from Caroline’s Capuchin - but the ride doesn't stop there. Larger shows and more touring is planned for the future. The eager and enthusiastic response from the fans for the album has been staggeringly heartfelt and that resolves CC even more to push the boundaries of music and bring people together.

Like the greatest composers (Beethoven, Mozart, Holst, Gershwin, Lennon, Mercury

As soon as the play button is pressed, the thing that hits me instantly about this record is just how GOOD it sounds. I could be forgiven for thinking a modern, funky jazz band had just set up in my living area were it not for the fact there is not enough room! Every nuance, every beat, every stabbing piano chord and bassline is crystal clear. This gives the record such immense depth, space and soul. This instantly likeable factor is essential for Caroline’s Capuchin, because instrumental Latin jazz fusion workouts could so easily fly over most people’s heads! The fact it is accessible to everybody is testament to the talent and song-writing craftsmanship the band deliver. Like the greatest composers (Beethoven, Mozart, Holst, Gershwin, Lennon, Mercury etc) the ability to produce music that satisfies both the intellectual musician and the everyday man in need of some no-brainer chillout music after a hard day at work is Caroline’s greatest strength. There is so much to absorb on this record. A plethora of engaging hooks, usually from the piano, all underpinned by some incredible drum and bass grooves and a whole host of additional percussive, dance rhythms. Almost silent moments of meandering subtlety give way to huge, purposefully driven and bombastic bass-heavy grooves. Different musical journeys often intertwine and collide; musical genres are fused together to seamless effect making everything seem so natural. Often teetering on the edge, the band still has the foresight and discipline to know when to hold back from becoming just another noisy mess of finite musical elitism. On occasion, some of ‘For What?’ does steer dangerously close to wine bar music, but like the song-titles, their apparent sense of humour would suggest that this is all part of some elaborate in-joke. Ironically, pour a glass of Chianti and put this on during a dinner party and Caroline’s Capuchin works perfectly, although I still prefer to crank it up, close my eyes and believe the band are back in the living room. Suffice to say, ‘For What?’ is an incredible album that I would recommend to anybody in need of something that actually is a bit different.

Fantastic four piece funk/latin/jazz sensation

This CD flows with class, right from the opening track 'Red Room' to the extra-secret hidden track 'Latin In A Car Crash' (you'll see), this album is a real delight. Many styles are explored here, as can be shown in the song 'Countdown To A Familiar Face' which begins quite dramatically, but levels out to a sleek latin piece, or 'Fresh Of Breath Air' which is very relaxing at first but builds towards an electrifying outro. In songs such as 'Span-Wah' and 'Theme From Bagnutt' reminds me of legendary keyboardist Bernie Worrell's style. Highly recommended album.
