Backed by a seasoned quintet of musicians, including Rick Stone on guitar, Danny Mixon on piano, and Eric Person on sax, Leven brings together an unusual mix of songs that work together naturally. Having performed a wide range of jazz standards for more than two decades in a variety of New York City venues, Leven began the "Between the Lines" project after being encouraged to record some of her original compositions. An experienced arranger, she had also been exploring new approaches to songs outside the traditional American "jazz canon," including 70s R&B pop songs and show tunes. So from Cole Porter to Carol Leven and from Motown to musicals, this collection proves that with good songs, a swinging band, and an honest vibe, no genre need apply. The result is a fresh collection of both old and new material that falls between the lines.
