From Utrecht, the Netherlands comes the incredible Carrera and their EP "6." Now I was instantly hooked on these guys when I heard "Don't Quit Your Day Job" but what threw me for a loop was that they cover a Steve Earle song ("Open Your Window") and another song features gospel backing vocals! Now make no mistake about it these guys are balls to the walls punk rock and rollers but they seem to offer something a little bit more than their self-described "where 80s rock meets old school punk rock, a touch of Americana....think of the Supersuckers, Steve Earle and the Ramones." Top notch rock and roll from across the pond. Check out the "Music Store" section of their site for some links to streams of a lot of their tunes. Great stuff.
Later.

'6' is party for diehard punkrockers
Carrera presents it's new EP friday
'6' is the title of the new album by the Utrecht punkband Carrera. The release has six songs concerning broken relationships and failed careers. The trio presents '6' on friday october 15th with a band from the same label Susan's Garden in dB's.
Carrera wants to persuade other musicians not to quit their jobs in 'Don't Quit Your Dayjob' ("I don't want to end up a slob/ don't quit your dayjob") en recites on broken hearts in 'It's all good' ("Now don't come crying/ when you're hurt again"). In the song 'So Long', a true two-person gospel chior is to be heard.
Everything is possible apparently in punk music these days. The band asked Steve Earle personally for his approval to use his composition 'Open Your Window'.
'6' offers average consistent punkrock that I don't care for much. But for the real diehard punkrockers, it's a good record to throw a party with. The EP is released on their new label Rumble Records, whereas their debut 'FreakyDeakyDutch' came out on Stacey Records. '6' must help the do-it-yourself band further in the world. And that could just succeed, because later this year the band will tour in Germany and has plans for Japan.
Carrera presents it's cd next friday October 15th with Susan's Garden in dB's in Utrecht. The party at the Cartetiusweg starts at 21:00 pm. Carrera plays thursday October 28th at 21:30 pm with Xpander on Dondeslag in Cafe Flitz in Utrecht.

Carrera
By Ingmar Griffioen in Utrechts Nieuwsblad (dutch regional newspaper)
The questionable opener of the new Carrera record, puts the listener on the wrong foot for a moment. Woo Woo sounds like a drunken Skik trying some punkrock for a change. Peculiar that the Utrecht punkrockers chose this as a starting point for the EP '6' on Rumble Records, the label by Theo de Jong, drummer for The Shavers; who was involved in the production. The trio regains itself with driven rhythms and sharp guitarplay. '6' contains six songs alright. The gents only use a mere 17 minutes to achieve that, and that says a lot. Punkrock songs just ask for a 'three-chords-treatment' in two-, maybe three minutes. But it has certainly not become a thirteen-in-a-dozen punkrelease. Carrera portray catchy riffs, en especially the second song 'Open Your Window' really sticks. Too bad it's a Steve Earle cover, but the choice shows this band from Utrecht's open approach. Johan Perk loudmouths, without overdoing it, and the backing vocals (just a tiny bit too quiet) just gives it that catchy, poppy feel. The ladies in the background are quite a surprising addition. Well. it's all been done before and the ending is no high flyer, but with songs #2 to #5 the Utrecht band should be able to persuade some programmers.
