[John Carrillo, Von Karma (4 x 4 review)]
John Carrillo is a singer/songwriter from Brea, CA. You can hear the Beatles, Ben Folds, and Elliott Smith influences throughout.
His vocals are great and interesting. The album is not over-produced, but somewhat produced, and spotlights his singing over the music. John a musician who sings his heart out and bares all in his music. This album features bass by Carol Kaye who played all the bass on The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album and has worked with Ray Charles. Tracks 1-4, and 7 lean towards rock while the rest can be country-ish.
Tracks 1 & 2, In the Market Square and Turn it up Dave!, are fun rockin' tracks. Track 4, Help Me John, It's a Girl!, is really cute and funny about a friend becoming a father. Track 6 is a lovely song with a nice melody about disappointments. Track 10, This Chapter is Closed, is a melancholy love ballad. Track 9, Milking Cows, is a sweet song about how relationships change you, and Track 11 is an acoustic version of the same song.
