ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This edition of The Dream features the beautiful cover art of Paul Foreman.

'Simply the most beautiful collection of songs from a local artist I have ever heard'
Michael Beaumont, RADIO FM 99.3

'Everytime I play a track from this album on the radio, I get callers;
"What was that beautiful thing you played after the news..."
James Valentine, ABC

'fascinating, very beautiful.... it's amazing'
Don Burrows

The Dream is a musical and engaging album, characterised by its lyricism and emotional integrity... Elizabeth has really come into her own. From the opening tune, the gentle Until I’ve Show You Paris, she commands the listener with her poignant, yearning vocal style and tender piano playing. The arrangements are creative and texturally rich... Furthermore, there are some thoughtful, probing ideas and beautiful imagery contained in the lyrics. ..Same World, Different Eyes, for example, deals with the corruption of childhood naivety by the adult sense of futility and the love songs, like The Dream, avoid obvious clichés, exploring instead the complexities and contradictions involved in romantic affairs.
This is a musically interesting and honest album, an impressive debut from a most promising singer/songwriter.
- Jasmine Crittenden DRUM MEDIA

'Elizabeth stands apart from our other artists simply because of her incredible talent and diversity as a magnificent vocalist, pianist, trumpet and flugelhorn player and last but not least as a composer...'
- Leslie Moore, AUSTRALIAN JAZZ AGENCY

New music with a twist.. sophisticated and sultry'
BENT magazine

'The melodies are infectious and the lyrics are intelligent .. poetic and thought provoking'
HAWKESBURY INDEPENDANT

"breathtaking"

Like a good wine improves with each listening
I first heard Elizabeth Carthew at her CD launch in Lismore, NSW, Australia September 2005. She totally captivated the whole audience that night. Along with a number of friends I became an instant fan and her Dream CD is one of my all time favourites. Apart from being a great singer she is a fabulous flugelhorn player as well as an accomplished pianist.

Elizabeth has, what I believe to be, a distinctively Australian flavoured Jazz/soul/folk style, unique in a world where so many non US performers are trying to emulate American styles and accents. Her sweet Aussie accent is always evident and adds just the right note of authenticity and sincerity to her heartfelt and insightful songs. The listener is constantly drawn into the stories which are woven through her exquisitely produced music. She is supported perfectly by some of Australia's best Jazz musicians.

For me, Elizabeth's masterful performances gently draw aside the outer curtain of our human pretenses to reveal totally engaging musical & lyrical insights. Insights which refer us to the constant tension we all know exists, and I would describe as the 'fragile strength' of the human condition. I constantly come away from this CD feeling that I know something more of the inner beauty of this poetic and thoughtful spirit who is Elizabeth Carthew.

It is truly regretable that such great talent and music so often struggles for well deserved wider recognition while so much mediocrity is celebrated far and wide.

As an avid record collector and a lifelong fan of a wide spectrum of music, I had reached a point a couple of years ago that I thought I had heard it all. Feeling a bit jaded, nothing could have prepared me for the restoration of faith in music that Elizabeth Geyer was about to give me. When I first heard "The Dream" as an album, I had to play it through three times in a row to make sure I was not dreaming myself. The level of songwriting from this Australian songbird is staggeringly good. "First Love" will have you swooning over this angel's voice as it glides like a swan over a lilting melody that encompasses both melancholy and bliss. It is one of the greatest songs ever written, and I mean that. Other gems found here are "The Dream," "Until I've Shown You Paris," "Welcome To My Movie," "You Carry Me Home" and "My Kind of Angel." Song after song, Elizabeth's soul is bared through her three lovely voices...her own, and that of her piano and flugelhorn. Her band provides a cohesive and steady heartbeat to this beautiful force of nature. This album, her second, is incredibly strong...polished, professional and full of heart. A masterpiece.

The Dream
Teriffic CD by jazz artist and singer/songwriter Elizabeth Geyer. This is a stunning collection of songs by an equally stunning, talented and original artist. I enjoyed each and every song and I'm hoping she decides to tour the U.S. very soon. I'll be sitting in the front row.
