Swedish Death Rockers, Casket Casey, have released their debut EP "Coffin Up Bones", via Blood And Guts Records. The band has labeled themselves as a Horror Rock, but aside from the grotesque content, I wouldn't call this Horror. However, Casket Casey, exudes Death Rock in the vein of Siouxsie, Killing Joke and Switchblade Symphony. Lead vocalist, Cia Hedmark, is the center of attraction; her vocals are sultry with a Jazz influence hidden deep within. Guitarist, Mattias Marklund, is also very impressive; his guitar riffs are very reminscent of Zakk Wylde and John Christ.

"Coffin Up Bones" is a concept EP in which we find the story of a female necrophiliac named Casket Casey. Opening track, "Back To Life", is an extravagant upbeat track packed with chunky guitar riffs and blazing leads. The subject matter deals with being exhumed from the grave and brought back to life through lesbian love. "Cold Flesh And Bone" is a gorgeous Death Rock ballad that sounds very similar to something from Type O Negative's "October Rust" cd. Again, the subject matter dances across the lines of being sick and demented. The track "She's Been Bad" is a nice Rock track, however, it fails to make a lasting impression on me namely due to the poor mix of the drums and bass. This EP ends with a doomy and gloomy track entitled "Still". I am deeply amused from the heavy presence of the guitar work and the majestic vocals.

Casket Casey's debut hasn't exactly blown my mind, but it has caught my attention. I am very eager to hear what the band has instore for their full-length, which I'm certain isn't too far away. I do hope they gravitate away from the morbid content and explore some of their innermost feelings.

When I first heard that Vintersorg/Otyg guitarist Mattias Marklund was going to release a horror punk album I was anxious and excited. I ordered the album "Coffin Up Bones" right away as soon as I found out it was released through the underground US horror label Blood And Guts Records. "Coffin Up Bones" is an MCD that contains four tracks that serves as a preview to the upcoming album the band are working on right now, and which should be released within the coming months. Marklund is joined on the release by vocalist Cia Hedmark also of Vintersorg/Otyg fame, drummer Stefan Strömberg who also was on the first Otyg album, and bassist Patrick Petterson.

The first thing I noticed while listening to the album is that there is no punk involved whatsoever. This is horror rock of the creepiest kind instead. The music tells the story of a woman named Casket Casey with a taste for necrophilia who visits the local graveyard late at night to search for and then dig up her next lover in the cold autumn breeze. During the first two tracks, 'Back To Life' and 'Cold Flesh And Bone' the story unfolds as we listen to Cia tell us firsthand of the grave robbing and necrophilia acts committed by miss Casket Casey. On 'She's Been Bad' the story shifts into the town's gossip, the people are realizing that something bad is going on right under their noses at that old house on the hill. Once they are in her house they are in for quite a grisly discovery. The final track 'Still' is Casey reflecting on her feelings and talking about the ones she has dug up and has a special place in her heart for.

Mattias' guitar work on 'Back To Life' and 'She's Been Bad' in particular is superb and quite often reminds me of former Danzig guitarist John Christ. Hedmark's vocal delivery is full and almost bluesy adding a sorrowful aspect. Lyrics are also included so you can get into the mind of Casket Casey yourself. Coffin Up Bones is the perfect album to play in the cold of autumn with thick grey clouds in the sky, a constant rain falling, and the cold night wind howling.

To tell you the truth, when I got COFFIN' UP BONES in my mail I didn’t expect a lot from this Swedish foursome. Maybe it was the uninteresting artwork, or the fact that I am no MCD lover, but something was telling me that Casket Casey wouldn’t offer me anything. I gave it a first listen and nothing, a second one and nothing, even a third one and still nothing. Since I had to review it for the site, I decided to give it a fourth and final listen and bam, here is where it all came together.



COFFIN' UP BONES is an amazing Horror Rock/Metal band formed from the ashes of Otyg, which includes the amazing Cia Hedmark on vocals. Her voice is so beautiful that you will be taken to a state of hypnosis throughout the 17 minutes of this interesting debut. The lyrics in COFFIN' UP BONES are about a female necrophiliac whose name you already know, Casket Casey.



The opener “Back to Life” is without a doubt the best song in this EP. It has an incredible Goth feeling that flows perfectly with the beautiful dark melody in the chorus. “Cold Flesh and Bone” is an hypnotic piece that has a pretty twisted piano throughout the song. This one reminds me a bit about The Gathering, a much darker one though. “She’s Been Bad” is what I would call the perfect example of Death Rock. Nothing more and nothing less. And “Still” has got to be the most hypnotic song in COFFIN' UP BONES. It is mostly a one-rhythm song that embraces you little by little until it suffocates you.



If she ever asked for it, I would give Casket Casey permission to continue her Necrophiliac adventures. She knows how to do handle them pretty well. I hope that in their debut full-length, the band is able to maintain the quality level of the first two songs. If that is the case, I can assure you that Casket Casey’s debut will be in my top ten of the year it is released. Now, just as advice, I recommend the band using a more natural drum sound next time.
