Album Notes

Cassie Morgan’s debut album “Pine So Sweet” features “sparse, haunted folk” compositions. Driven equally by compelling songwriting and mesmerizing vocals, the songs combine traditional folk or rock instruments (electric and acoustic guitars, drums, bass, and piano) with the less traditional addition of glockenspiel, Rhodes, finger snaps and hand claps, whistling, and eerie slide guitar. “Paper Leaves,” which was recorded on the back porch of the recording studio in Chicago, includes the natural sounds of wind, birds, and leaves, as well as well-timed ambulance sirens. “Paper Leaves” received honors as the Sepiachord Song of the Day in October 2008.

Hailing from the rural background of Southern Illinois, Morgan began performing solo while also playing bass and singing background vocals with The Great Lakes in St. Louis in 2007. Prior to that, Morgan performed with St. Louis-based band Jonas Lyn. Beth Bombara (Eyeteeth Records) began accompanying Morgan in June of 2008, contributing background vocals, keys, percussion, and lead guitar among many other musical talents.

The “Pine So Sweet EP” was produced, mixed, and mastered by Joey Lemon in Chicago, IL (Berry, Samantha Crain, Caleb Engstrom), and features the members of Berry (Joey Lemon, Matt Aufrecht, and Paul Goodenough), and Lindsey Czechowicz.

The CD sleeves for the "Pine So Sweet EP" are made of 100% recycled paperboard.

This album has the history and grit to make it really a wonderful first effort by the artist. The songs portray that feeling like the artist is living the life and pain to a share cropper in the 30's. I can feel the calluses on her hands. The songs are real stories about they hard lives lived years a go not just abstracts of a movie preview. I can't wait for the next work to come out. Very different and real. Organic Jazz Blues music - the kind they just don't make any more.
