notes

Listening to Castles in Spain is like sipping red wine, smoking hashish, and drinking a shot of espresso. The music is an opiate, which transcends life's trials, delivering solace and the possibility of salvation. With a certain Castilian/Moorishflavor, Castles in Spain takes you on a spiritual field trip through the darker recesses of the soul. Dirges darken catacombs while wine cellar skeletons buried long ago surface to see the light of day. Hope, warmth, and then back down again. Don Quixote meets Edgar Allen Poe.

The San Francisco Bay Guardian describes the music as "Bombay Zeppelin. "Imagine Jimmy Page and Robert Plant riding through the desert, kicking up dust and camel shit at some Cairo bazaar, where Chrissie Hynde is sitting in with Jane's Addiction, playing Black Sabbath and middle-eastern folk music."

Biachi, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, has been performing since the age of four inspired by her mother who was a professional singer, percussionist and belly dancer in Bombay, India. At the age of seven, her father bought her a drum set which she played continuously to the recordings of legendary rock bands. The neighbors were NOT thrilled to live near a future drummer. This did not stop Biachi from pursuing music. She bought herself a 12 string acoustic guitar at the age of 18 and taught herself to play by ear. Three months later she started writing songs and hasn't stopped since. After receiving an electric guitar from a group of friends, she was inspired to start a band called... Castles In Spain. Completing the Castles' sound are Joe Birtola on bass, Derek Richmond on guitar and Anthony Verdier on drums & percussion.

Biachi has written, arranged and produced 3 solo recording's, 4 full length CD's and had the good fortune to cut some tracks with Eddie Kramer (Producer/Engineer for the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and SO many more credits, it is ridiculously impressive). Recently Castles In Spain recorded two new singles with producer/engineer Steve "Snake" Green. Currently Castles' is filming for upcoming videos for release in late 2007.

Musical Influences: U2, Evanescence, Siouxsie and The Banshees, A Perfect Circle, Lacuna Coil, Concrete Blonde, Jane's Addiction, Led Zeppelin, Sinead O'Connor, Nirvana, The Cure, The Verve, Dead Can Dance, Annie Lennox, Grace Slick, and the list goes on and on...

  • Grace Slick singing for Nirvana. Simple and deep. Morning maniac music
    author: voodoo chile

First--great CD, Now--constructive review. Singer is great but always cuts her last word in a phrase short. It should extend as far as the music does. Exotic sound could be enhanced the way Led Zep enhanced it, without becoming too complex and losing the Simple Nirvana sound. Giving a more original sound too. Deeper blues variations would add more roots and variety to the songs. A great CD though and definately worth buying. Like early Fleetwood Mac, this CD would start slow for you, but grow on you until you found yourself singing the songs. Also like Dylan in that way, but with lesser lyrics. I`m sure this won`t get published. I only hope that the artists will read it. Electric guitar on half the tunes would also add spice and needed changes in volume within songs to add emphasis to important song parts. Again--electric blues guitar with NO vocals--following a vocal of the idea and saying it again with music only.
