Catastrofiks - The Cirrcus
Akhenation Music/Philasofikal Records

Three man crew Catastrofiks come through with their debut album 'The Cirrcus'. Reppin' Philly hip-hop in style with help from Philly veteran Mike Lowe (aka Amazingrace) handling the bulk of production.

'The Cirrcus' sees Vision, Rook and D-Rellz mixing it up with solo, duo and tracks with all three members across the 18 tracks (1 skit) of the album. On this debut guest appearances were kept to a minimum with Young Phil appearing on 'Bring it Back', Mr. Eon (of The High & Mighty) on the album's standout 'Spin It', State Store on 'Bonita' and Bradd on 'Heyyo'

Catastrofiks manage to hold together a solid debut while exploring different styles of rap from more commercial club-like material through to political and underground bangers. Stand outs on the album would have to be 'AOL - America On Lockdown' where the three explore political themes over a beat produced by Auspex and 'Spin It' featuring the charismatic Mr Eon over a bouncy head nodder by Mike Lowe.

This is a very solid debut that leaves you wanting to hear more. The dope tracks outweigh the lesser tracks by far and there's enough variety to keep you listening. Def worth a listen.

His (vision) rap group, the Catastrofiks, produced and independently released their debut LP which contains 19 tracks, most of which have a distinctive Philadelphia flavor. Since rap is like soul food - prepared the same but containing different ingredients - his group showcased the primary ingredients needed for a commercially successful hip hop act: the ability to flow with confidence and conviction.

Their tracks, "The Conception," and "The Cirrcus" quickly and easily put them in the ring with the most potent rappers on the airwaves (or underground for that matter), but it's their most commercial track, "Comin In," that establishes them as innovators of their own "brand." It's radio friendly and would make the perfect first single.

------------

While it may only be on rare occasions that you could see your favorite hip hop act gracing the stage at Carnegie Hall, rappers have been known to put in plenty of practice. Wherever the drive stems from, some performers can't be swayed in their drive to grab the mic. The fledgling Philly hip hop collective Catastrofiks, who are dropping their debut album, The CirRcus, on June 7, stand testament to the fact that sometimes you just can't knock the creative hustle. Boasting the talents of 215 natives D-Rellz, Vision, and Rook, the group spends their debut album weaving tales and dropping rhymes that fall right in line with the high-caliber material the Philly underground hip hop circuit is historically known for -- Mr. Eon of scene mainstays High and Mighty even guest stars on "Spin It." And to top it all off, the group's label, Philasofikal Records, is throwing them a record release party on June 8 as a part of the biweekly party "What's Good Wednesdays" at the Five Spot in Olde City. "Working and performing with [that kind of talent] has allowed us to solidify our style as a group and given us the confidence to bring our music to the next level," says D-Rellz via email. The event will be hosted by Eon, and features performances by the likes of Chief Kamachi, State Store, Adam 12, and of course the Catastrofiks themselves, proving they are worthy of sharing the stage with the more established. Step right up.

I came across these guys listening on college radio. I heard the song The circus, and immediately sarched to find theyre cd, which i got from tower records. Amazing lyrics and thought provoking subjects-- honestly I don't see how these guys aren't huge superstars, especially considering what Ive been hearing on the radio recently.
