Album Notes

Cat Dail & the Magnets are a 5-piece band (2 guitars, bass, drums and keys) with a lot of talent and a decidedly indie groove. The band collaborates on the music and Dail provides the lyrics. Dail also produced this latest offering "Shimmer Glow" (release, Feb 2011.)

Award winning singer/ songwriter/ guitarist, Cat Dail has been part of the NYC indie music scene since fronting her successful 90s band, distant cousins. The cousins released 2 records with wild success for an unsigned band. They sold ten thousand records, and merch, off stages to a robust and loyal fan base. Distant cousins achieved CMJ stature, and toured the country playing to their mostly college radio audience. They were fixtures in the NYC club scene and played all the best places (including CBGBs, the Lone Star, the Mercury and regular Friday nights at the Bitter End), always packing the house.

Dail went on to record her first solo cd, "Choice" in 2004. Featuring Tom 'Bones' Malone (Blues Brothers Horns) and other luminaries, the record was produced by Dail & Grammy winner, Harvey Jay Goldberg (Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones, plus, plus!) "Choice" also marked the origins of the Magnets with stellar guitarist, Joel Newton (Joel Newton Situation, Christian Howes, Matt Shulman), and brilliant keyboardist, Aaron Whitby (George Clinton, Martha Redbone), joining in.

"Shimmer Glow" brings Dail, Newton and Whitby together, again, with Dail's original distant cousins rhythm section of Bill Berry and John Kim. It's a compact, extremely able group, producing remarkable arrangements with lush results. The styles visited are eclectic: rock, funk, disco, reggae, alt. country... but they all come together because the band has a definitive, signature style. Dail's vocals are bang on, full of emotion and whimsy, velvet. The Magnets play beats, solos, fills with a high level of agility, passion and fun. Flavors of rain stick, Be-bot, and more, spice this record to great taste. This cd is one for people who really like music!

Guest performances by Joe 'Mama' Holland (harmonica), Rob DiPietro and Koko Jones (both percussion), and Martha Redbone and Ilie Kochie (both additional vocals) give "Shimmer Glow" texture and relay the open, happy, collaborative vibe of the band.

Beautifully recorded by Teddy Kumpel (Feist, Nine Inch Nails, Rickie Lee Jones); masterfully mixed, again, by Harvey Jay Goldberg (Late Show with David Letterman); and perfectly mastered by another Grammy winner, Gene Paul of G&J Audio, the record *sounds* fantastic! The album art appeals and was created by renowned NYC designer (Met Opera, Broadway and Narciso Rodriguez) Roxana Ramseur.

Lots of fun, some pathos, and some sass in this pleasurable album. Cat Dail's voice is one you'd follow anywhere, and her terrific band is totally in sync with her. "My Place and "Stuck" are personal favorites, and "Love in Africa" and "Lude Interbass" keep things surprising.

I just listened to shimmer glow. Awesome! I think the songs are some of their best and I love all the experimentation with instrumentations as well. Are Cat & the Magnets planning on playing out again in NY? Great work!

Here's a note to say I love Shimmer Glow. It's a catchy, snappily wrought delight that has already spawned a few earworms. I love the original compositions and the XTC cover at the end with it's clever nod to Chrissie Hynde's 'Message of Love.' All pleasure!
