Cathead Dooly is a southern country/rock band from Middle Georgia, an area with a long history of musical excellence having produced such artists as The Allman Brothers, Otis Redding, Little Richard, and Stillwater to name just a few. The Cathead Dooly band specializes in music ranging from old and new country classics, Texas two-step, and Southern Rock, to original music written by Cathead Dooly band members. Their shows mix music that will have you toe tapping, slow dancing, fast dancing, laughing, and listening.
Cathead Dooly specializes in playing for such occasions as festivals, business entertainment, political events, corporate openings, fund-raisers, weddings, parties, and barbecues. Cathead Dooly tours in Britain annually and leaves for their 2004 tour in May. With a song repertoire of over 100 pieces of music they can usually tailor the play list to your event. They have even been known to write songs especially for an occasion.
Band members include:
Aubrey Ray: guitar, mandolin, banjo, and lead vocals
Brian Whitehead: flattop guitar, and lead vocals
Keith Dean: guitar, pedal-steel guitar, and vocals
Chuck Spivey: bass guitar, and vocals
Bruce Allen: drums, accessory percussion, and vocals
Francis Peed: Keyboards
On occasion the band will bring guest performers to be highlighted during shows. Performers playing with the band in the past have included Scott ("Scooter") Pallot (Vocals, guitar, harmonica), Annmarie Riley (Talent winner, TV, and recording artist from Wales),
In case you are wondering, the band name of Cathead Dooly was conceived by Aubrey Ray in about 1970, and is based on two of his favorite things...food and people. A cathead biscuit is an old Southern term for a biscuit made by rolling a piece of bread dough in your hands to about the size and shape of a cat's head; then cooking it to a golden brown. Aubrey loves cathead biscuits so much that he has even written a song called "Sopping Syrup" about them. The person connection for the band name goes back to when Aubrey was a teen-ager. There was a friend in Aubrey's small home town who had the habit of when leaving, instead of just saying "goodbye", he would wave and say, "Yours truly, Cathead Dooly". Now his name wasn't Dooly and he wasn't known as "Cathead". It's just one of those country sayings that you hear when you grow up in the South.
