BLUES MATTERS! MAGAZINE, THE UK'S LEADING AND MOST REWARDED BLUES MAGAZINE!!!!!

Love the new cd!!!!! Now we reviewed this lady's Marshall Road Apocalypse album back in issue 7 and here we are with this tasty morcel which we are told is her 5th album. There was a sad note with the album that the bands bass player Wade Matthews had passed away on August 18th, our condolences. Cathy and the band rock you in with Bitchovich which is vicious story of scheming women and jealousy check out the line; "with your blonde hair (real tight clothes) and big tits all the things my good man can't resist" and you get a feel for the bitchyness going on here, well put over and 'rockin' good. So Proud is a swinging song about "my man's bishop" but you have to listen or read the lyrics to spot this as the music is so damn good. Something Dark Approaching slows down the process and carries some fine organ and guitar along with another variation on Cathy's vocals. This is excellent stuff. Cathy hits you between the eyes with her powerful songs, all good compositions and the band do her proud. Blues Revue said about her that "she is a gifted vocalist and aspiring songwriter who deserves to go mainstream". The PR stuff is minimal and Cathy obviously lets her CDs do her talking, and they do it remarkably well. This is a pretty powerful album all round, it builds, it deals with fragilities, fears, jealousies, alcoholism, insecurities, and all in a hard way. The lyrics pack a punch and are almost a range of social commentaries and the music is equally as provocative. She rocks, swings, grooves and entices. Check out her web site. Oh, and 16 page sleeve with all lyrics. Loved it, loved it, give me more. --Caleb, editor, BLUES MATTERS!

(!!!!!) BLUES REVUE MAGAZINE

Cathy Jean’s “Little Sick Twist” takes some getting used to. Maybe it’s the sex-kitten pinup art that adorns her CDs and almost every page of liner notes, or maybe it’s because a couple of tunes sound like Chrissie Hynde or Patti Smith talking dirty (“Paint My Fence,” for example, or “Brunettes,” about a torrid lesbian encounter). Or maybe it’s the notion that someone so physically attractive shouldn’t have the blues in the first place. But when you listen to these 15 tunes, all but one of which bear Cathy Jean’s solo writing credit, you find two truths: One, her vocal prowess and lyrical phrasing are considerable, and two, if you listen long enough you’ll get what you need. Smoky blues numbers such as “Something Dark Approaching” appear alongside tracks such as “Slow Down,” a fiddle and banjo tune with its heart in Nashville, its gut in Memphis, and its nethers further south.

On the blues-rocking “Not Pretty,” the singer describes herself as tan and buff-- until she reveals the psychic damage she’s endured and the neediness that compels her to beg the man she’s addressing to “come hang out with me.” “Happy Couple” uses the jump blues idiom to address a crumbling live-in relationship where the guy won’t pay half of the bills. “No More Pecking,” a piano bar blues featuring cornet, tells a story of sexual dysfunction in which the relationship has become one-sided, the man happier to be playing video games than tapping the narrator. Risky song subjects and the fine musicianship of the supporting players suggest that when Jean gets a wider audience, it’s going to be because, deep down, she’s all blues-- postmodernist Betty Paige irony notwithstanding. --Michael Cala, BLUES REVUE

ALLIGATOR RECORDS

I enjoyed "Deeper", "Paint My Fence", "Happy Couple" (I am a blues guy after all), "Brunettes" (nice rockabilly feel plus interesting fantasy), "Something Dark Approaching", "The Judge" (hilarious, loved the accordian), "No More Pecking" (cool 50's jazz feel). (Cathy Jean's) imagination certainly goes in a lot of different directions lyrically, and the overall level of musicianship is very good. The packaging is quite something. I guess I initially took it seriously but now see the satirical level. Production is very ambitious with lots of different instrumental textures, and things like banjos and fiddles coming and going. All in all a very ambitious record with a lot of layers ...and some really quirky moments both lyrically and musically ...I found myself drawn in and intrigued throughout. Congratulations...it's hard to hold my attention.-- Bruce Iglauer, CEO and Founder, ALLIGATOR RECORDS

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL BLUES RADIO, PARIS, FRANCE

Hey Cathy! Sounds like you're made of pure energy and feeling! 5 out of 5 stars: A pleasure of feeling different.
"Something Dark Approaching" is certainly the bluest blues song I've heard this year. Better than anyone else Cathy has expressed not just her own feelings, but the feelings of millions of us who can't sleep well these nights. The music and vocals on the whole album are hypnotizing, and the lyrics are infinitely deep and honest. Kidding and serious at the same time, changing rhythms and styles just like clothes, Cathy sings all 15 songs as a single one. At least I feel it like this. As if it was not an album but a 15 chapter book whose message is so meaningful and so beautifully presented that it brings a real pleasure to play (listen? read?) it over and over again. An intellectual pleasure. Because Cathy Jean feels and thinks so contagiously different that you inevitably start to feel and think different yourself. Isn't it a pleasure?.. So, FEEL DIFFERENT - buy Little Sick Twist right now! You'll regret all your life if you don't! -- Paul Bondarovski, MIDNIGHT SPECIAL BLUES RADIO

"It is blues at the raunchiest, and at the same time, it is sweet. This woman has got an incredible set of pipes. The more I listen to the cd, the more I like. She's got some killer players, including the late, great, Wade Matthews. What a monster player he was. I really liked her last record, I thought it was great. I was excited when I got her new release... there are moments of brilliance on the album. She writes cool songs and if you dig the blues, you gotta take a listen to 'Little Sick Twist' from Cathy Jean." --Susie Mudd, editor, Music Monthly Magazine

  • Another sexy blues album from Cathy Jean!
    author: Ted in Norfolk, VA

Cathy Jean's LITTLE SICK TWIST is another magnificently sexy blues outing from a singer/songwriter who should be a blues legend! It continues her exploration of blues and blues rock with a "sick twist" (or should that be a "sexy twist") from her previous releases: I WANT, TEAR ME APART, and MARSHALL ROAD APOCALYPSE (also highly recommended). From songs from the wronged woman to songs from the femme fatale, Cathy Jean's lyrics explore territory usually found only in rare classic jazz and country. The musicianship is astounding, too (so sorry to hear about bassist Wade Matthew's passing). I would love to see this woman live! C'mon, Cathy--Norfolk is not that far from Baltimore! Cathy Jean ranks up there with Deborah Coleman!

  • Cathy Jean's Best Album (so far!)
    author: DMD

Every track is excellent and it is difficult picking out standout tracks but I do have to mention The Judge (written by Cathy Jean). The music and lyrics of The Judge seem almost opposites yet it all comes together so wonderfully. If you buy this album you will certainly not be disappointed because you will be getting a CD full of excellent music, singing, lyrics, etc. Cannot wait for Cathy Jean's next album.

  • acid tipped tongue
    author: The BluesBunny

The themes of cheating women and lying men are common in the country music genre. On this album Cathy Jean brings her acid tipped tongue to bear on these and a number of other, rather more explicit, themes. "Brunettes" had the BluesBunny reaching for the lyric booklet to check if he had indeed heard what he thought he had heard. Not for grandma. The thing about this album is that it sounds like a polished album of rhythm and blues. After a couple of plays, you start listening to the lyrics. "Not Pretty" for example sounds like rock radio fodder but is actually a frank tale of self destruction. Or try the wondrous, bluesy "Something Dark is Approaching Me". Not that the album is without humour - check out the Cajun flavoured "The Judge". At least we hope she is having a laugh. A remarkably honest album that rewards close investigation. One more thing. Nice shoes, girl! 4 carrots!

  • Intense at every angle

Whew! Every song on this disc takes you on a mind bending journey-- Cathy Jean writes about subject matter we only dare to think about. Tight, tight, musicianship. Good Lord!

This album is a classic-- I really think that Cathy Jean has hit some serious stride here. Can't wait to hear more of her "little sick" blues.

  • Rock, Blues, Cajun and some Jazz ... On one CD ?
    author: Geri Ebner

I thought you can need a german review as well. Here it is: Rock, Bluesrock, Blues, Slow-Blues, ein wenig Cajun und auch jazzige Einflüsse auf einer CD? Nicht immer leicht zu finden, vor allem nicht von einer Künstlerin. "Little Sick Twist" kann man vorbehaltlos weiterempfehlen. Respekt!

  • Vier Punkte
    author: Concerto Magazine, Vienna, Austria

(Translation from German:) Cathy Jean from Baltimore made her sexy appearance to the trademark and already at the cover of her CDs, is unique and to be recognized unambiguously. But the Lady can also sing and proves it impressively with her own songs, which often also relevant the texts-- the Americans would say "dirty words"-- to contain. A far mixture of skirt is played over blues, bluesrock, and slowblues, in addition to cajun and jazzige influences. Immediately the first number, "Bitchovich", a rocksong, contains all advantages of Cathy Jean. It is accompanied by her group of excellent musicians, whereby particularly Keith Stafford at the guitars out-stings. "Deeper" prices itself through outstanding brazenness, "Slow Down" expands and is completed additionally around by banjo and fiddle, and "The Judge" is a cajun-number also of outstanding brazenness. Very varied. --Dietmar Hoscher, Head of Blues Department, Concerto Magazine

  • She's the real deal
    author: Greg R., Baltimore, MD

I bought Cathy Jean's other 3 CDs a few years ago, and was blown away by her talent as a singer and a songwriter. One song after another is just cool as hell, and if they don't flow from her own life story she can add acting to her talents as well. Why she isn't famous is a mystery; she's the real deal -- what more could you want in a blues singer? She'll be widely known some day, I predict -- until then, she'll just be one of our great Baltimore secrets.

  • The Cathy Jean I've Been Waiting For
    author: Hilfy

Cathy Jean has had everything needed to be a major artist for some time now: a solid, powerful, expressive voice; a songwriting style well-suited to her abilities (and in no way suffering from an "excess of consistency," almost as many styles as there are songs); and a generally off-center style that I find very refreshing in this age of homogenized "music product." With this album, she puts all that together, along with an excellent backup group, arrangement that gives her a foundation to build on without drowning her in the mix, and crystalline production. If you're considering getting a Cathy Jean album, GET THIS ONE FIRST! Unless, of course, the next one somehow turns out even better (the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars).

It's not fair to see so many blues gentlemen passing away... time for the new generation of blues! Carry it on by such successful artists as Cathy Jean! She respects the music and does it on a completely different level. Incredible, smart, witty--- slap yourself and wake up to the new blues generation!!!!! Cathy Jean IS IT!!!!!

  • Highly Commendable!
    author: Blues Art Studio Magazine

If one applies the rule of judging a book by its cover, then an awful lot of people are going to be greatly surprised and disappointed; for although the enticingly sultry and alluring images in the cd booklet show Cathy in various poses, styles and types of underwear, beware! They falsely lead you on so, unless you are interested in quality music; put the cd back in the rack now. For the rest of us; we are treated to fifteen self-penned, numbers, including some of the most imaginatively arranged, powerful mixtures of R’n’B, Blues, Cajun, Rock, Rockabilly and Jazz around. When the pace does slow down it is to a seductively steamy soft focus glow backed with a tight, tight hot horn section that Nelson Riddle, (Frank Sinatra’s bandleader) would be proud of. All the musicians on the album give Cathy such solid and richly textured support. The lyrics of the very salacious and murkier adult subject matter are delivered by Cathy in a sultry, sexy, sometimes vitriolic spitting manner, enticing you into her world inhabited by mind numbingly unfeeling plastic carded, lapped up, lap dancing loving, blindly selfish men. Some of the women are surgically enhanced leggy lovelies who sell love, warmth, trust and devotion for even more flexible friends. Her heroines have at some point in the past been abused, used, dumped or raped and are filled to the brim with revengeful rancour. Cathy Jean is very definitively a cross between Germaine Greer! and Millie Jackson, her use of double entendre’s is very inventive and imaginative. Adult themes dealt with in an enticingly adult manner. This album will certainly steam up the blues! Highly commendable! --Brian Harman, Blues Art Studio Magazine

  • Jean enters territory rarely explored in the blues
author: Billy Austin, Blues Society of Tulsa, Oklahoma

In the world of blues music which is often too predictable and laden with 3-chord boredom,Cathy Jean not only has broken the mold, but blown it all to hell. This is her 5th CD, although the only one I’ve heard. Once you get your eyes unglued from the photos, prepare for a real ride. Don’t try to categorize her, whether you’re talking about her music or sexual preference-- at least in her lyrics. Jean enters territory rarely explored in the blues. Her attitude and spunk is reminiscent of Chrissie Hynde ala 1980. From the opening song, “Bitchovich”, Jean cuts to the chase: “With your blonde hair (too tight clothes) and big tits. All the things my good man can’t resist. I know you are scheming to get my man. I am gonna mess you up and your plan.” In “So Proud” she sings about: “Perfectly endowed. I love how I get plowed. Yeah my man’s royal scepter makes me so proud.” The tune features one mean harp. This CD is heavy into rock, but has one true blues tune, “Something Dark Approaching”. I love her vocals on this tune where the guitar takes over her voice. “Little Sick Twist” as a CD hits on everything from strip bars to using holy water to keep out demons. This CD is laced with great horns, a banjo, fiddle, keyboards, rhythym section and Jean’s own vocals, solid guitar playing and writing: from country to jazz and cajun. My favorite albums are one’s that get better as you listen multiple times, which this one does. --Billy Austin, Blues Society of Tulsa, Oklahoma

    author: Sheryl and Don Crow

Cathy--hope you like our review! Yours is a "fun" listen! Here we go... Growing up in Middle Tennessee, it didn't take long for most of the young men around here to become aware of Nashville's most famous "model," 50's pinup queen Bettie Page. Well, if Bettie had been a blonde blues singer, she would've been Cathy Jean! This sassy, sexy diva has released her latest rockin' set, "Little Sick Twist," which not only showcases her fantastic vocal prowess, but her clever, slyly-sexy lyric writing as well! With a powerful voice that can go from an angelic coo to a devilish growl virtually instsntaneously, Cathy exudes a sexuality and passion that's capable of captivating listeners throughout the CD. Check out the opening "Bitchovich," Cathy's plot to get back at a man-stealer! Former Nighthawk Mark Wenner deals some fancy harp on "So Proud," a too-cool tale about her man's "bishop." But, you gotta really listen to "get" the lyrics! Reminding people to "Slow Down" makes clever use of banjo and fiddle along with a swingin' jump-blues arrangement, while a lively Cajun accordion fuels "The Judge," a bizarro tale of Cathy's revenge on a man who went a bit too far with her! A sad ending to a relationship gone sour is the subject of "No More Pecking," whose idiotic male subject would rather play video games than be with her! It also contains a fine, jazzy horn arrangement, too. One of the strongest cuts on the album is the slow, brooding, "Something Dark Approaching." Here, Cathy is attempting to do battle with her inner demons and paranoias, and her vocals are supplanted by killer organ work from Jon Carroll. In listening to Cathy's lyrics, you can find a plethora of social commentaries and dealings with human frailties, addictions, and passions. We likened this one to being able to take a peek inside your big sister's diary, as we felt that we were being given a personal glimpse of Cathy's innermost feelings set to these songs. A truly gifted singersongwriter, Cathy Jean indeed deserves national attention. Here's hoping "Little Sick Twist" will be the break she's been looking for! Until next time...Sheryl and Don
