Summer, Delfzijl, Netherlands:
Hermann-Maria von Gustafson II, at this time merely a wee lad, was plucked from his peaceful schoolboy's life as a butcher's son, frolicking through the baroque gardens of the duchess's palace, and taken captive by the ruthless band of scallywags, the Dutch Harbor Pirates of 173rd East Pier, Anchoring Berth Four. Hermann-Maria was afraid at first but soon grew accustomed to life at sea. He pillaged and plundered and drank and was merry with his fellow merry men. One hellish day after being sent to the hull to fetch a plank for patchwork, he stumbled across a Lute that fell upon his head and smote him senseless. From that day forward, his fascination with this strange instrument o'ertook him and thus he wrote his first shanty, "For a Pirate, Everything's Free." For his amazing musical ability and seamanship, Hermann-Maria was named "Pirate of the Year" and also "Captain of the Ship." In order to avoid embarrassment, Hermann-Maria von Gustafson II changed this landlubber birth-name of his to Darby O'Bill, a much more seaworthy nomenclature. Several songs were written and their band of pirates gained world infamy. And they all lived happily ever after.
