Album Notes

Refusing to be defined by categories, Cece blends musical styles and subject matter, from moving ballads about the complexities of love, to wry, jazzy takes on being a modern woman. Music for life as we know it. Music Berlin and Porter would have written if they had to deal with 21st century life. And hot flashes.
Add to this a compassion for the larger issues of the world: a haunting lullaby for a child in Darfur and a powerful anthem about murdered women in Juarez, Mexico, set to a driving Latin rhythm.

And a note from me: I have never been in the market for normal, even though I’ve played a lot of normal roles in my life. But normal is all about staying put, enthusiastically or automatically buying into how things appear to be. I spent much of my life as an educator, in a variety of settings, from the heart of the barrios to boardrooms. The one thing I knew for sure was that life is all about learning. I finally learned enough to realize I had nothing left to teach.
And so I came back to music. The learning doesn’t stop; it’s just become a lot more aesthetically pleasing to me – and hopefully to you.
I’ve never been interested in categories, which pretty much insured my career limitations in academia. What gets me going is always that space where circles overlap, where worlds collide (or seem to), where life gets complicated (or seems to!). You may find it easy to detect my generation in my music, more by what you won’t hear than what you will.
More than anything, I try to be true to the human emotions I observe, in myself and others, no matter how deep that takes me. Some songs you can only write with a little life under your belt. I like it that way.
