Album Notes

Since 1999 Cecilia Stalin has been working as a freelance vocalist. In Sweden her engagements have ranged from working with various small groups to bigband. Cecilia has also been a featuring vocalist of several aditional groups that she has recorded and toured with like Koop (Disel Records). After moving to New York in 2003, she started working in various jazz clubs in the NYC area (Arturos, Sweet Rythm, UpOver JazzCafe etc.). She performed with such artists as Charles Tolliver JazzOrchestra and Reggie Workmans Coltrane group, and recorded alongside Harry Withaker, but was mainly performing with her own sextet to which she also composed most of the material. The Cecilia Stalin Sextett was formed in New York 2003 and has recorded the CD "Plays". In '04 Cecilia moved back to Stockholm again. There she formed a Swedish quintet with whom she just recorded her CD "Straight Up".

'Cecilia is a knowlaged and personal jazzvocalist, definately belonging in our countrys top division' - Jan Olsson, Skånska Dagbladet.

'Cecilia cleverly carved a niche for herself in an area, which is usually dominated by varied instrumentalists; her disciplined approach to improvisation illustrates that she can execute lines comparable to any instrumentalist. Ms.Stalin's unique vocal quality added depth and variety to the ensemble' - Reggie Workman (bass player).

'Cecilia is a genuine and natural jazz musician, very competent and musically experienced. She has got a warm, expressive voice and a very nice time, knows her harmony, she is a good improvisor, and above all, she communicates with her fellow musicians extremely well' - Irene Sjögren (jazzvocalist and teacher at the Royal Music Collage in Stockholm).

this cd is very good jazz.....first heard her on waltz for koop and loved her voice. I bought this hoping it sounded similar. However, its definitely less ethereal than on koop, but still good, more contemporary jaz than the fusion of koop. Buy it!

ABOUT TIME
author: MARTIN
i first heard cecilia on sons of koop and was knocked out then by her heavenly voice. a few years have passed since that record until she also guested on the waltz for koop album which was released a few years ago. imagine my surprise when out of the blue i was informed that she has her own record out. not before time. straight jazz, great musicianship and of course that voice. hope the next record won't be long in arriving. (i would love to hear cecilia with an orchestra)

I love it!! It's inventive but swinging!

Ceceilia has an incredible voice that gives me a chill cos she has both the depth of Ella but still the fragile tone of Minnie Riperton. And the compositions - so beautifly melodic yet rythmicly challenging! Buy it!!!
