Celtic Mayhem

Celtic Mayhem is the best Celtic/Irish band in the country! I've seen CM dozens of times at renfaires and pubs and enjoyed the band's members in their other projects. Their musicianship. vocals and stage show are second to none. Not only are they great players, they can make you laugh with their humour and make you cry when they sing one of their songs of "unrequited love". Only one complaint: bass player Martyn only sings one song on the album

It is a pleasure to write a review for Jim and Holly Lawrence’s Celtic Mayhem. I am always searching for new recordings of Celtic Music and it was chance that led me to play the bits available for this CD. Jim and Holly specialize in traditional Celtic music, done, for the most part, in traditional fashion, yet in a distinctive manner, indicative of their special vocal qualities and styles. Bedlam Boys and Blackled Miner, for example, have an earthy, almost rough quality to them that suits the songs’ words and tempo. Spancil Hill, The Fields of Athenry, and She Moved Through the Fair, are slower paced, and both richer and softer in their vocal renditions, and the voices of the singers, come across in a gentle clarity that is often missing in Celtic music. The diction is also excellent and the words are clear and easily understood. The pacing of all the tracks is measured and perfect. That said, the CD is definitely of an American nature and contains an element that blends it with music of the American West, rather in the manner of David Wilkie. Jim’s voice is mellow, at times reminiscent of Neil Diamond or Bruce Springsteen and at others of the late Phil Ochs. Holly’s has the pure clarity associated with British and Irish sopranos, such as Mary O’Hara and Mary Hopkins. Of the CD’s eleven tracks, Rolling Down to Old Maui was new to me, and seems the least Celtic in nature, but rounds off the disc well and was an enjoyable find. Highly recommended.

I love this CD. My favorites are "Skibbereen", "Finnagan's Still" & "Dance With Me". This is the best Celtic band around right now. I'm hoping that they stay together and just keep getting better as time goes by. I'm so glad that I met these three men and am friends with this band and the caretaker of their official fan club. See you guys in 243 more days.
