Album Notes

Singing and the Healing Journey

Colleen Geraghty has been quietly and steadily building and international reputation for herself as an impressive and original singer/songwriter. She has become known as a teller of tales whose haunting melodies and lyrical themes emanate from the deepest part of her Celtic ancestry. One reviewer described her music as "alternative country with folk and celtic influences. Her songs have been described as transformational healing journeys woven with a voice that awakens the soul, enchants the heart and mesmerizes the listener. When listening to Colleen sing, it is difficult to believe that she has not been singing her whole life. Her voice is deep and rich and so haunting that you will think you've been listening to her in your dreams, in that magical place where melodies are born. Colleen's musical journey began just eight years ago when her daughter asked her, "Mommy, how come I have never heard you sing?" Her daugther unwittingly sent an invitation to Colleen's muse and in doing so, she changed the course of their lives forever. Once Colleen set forth on the journey to find her "forgotten singer", there was no turning back.

Courting the muse was simple, but coaxing the exiled voice back into her life was riddled with more challenges than Colleen could have imagined. Having worked as a social worker and a teacher for many years, Colleen was familiar with various healing modalities but she was so consumed with the demands of balancing a her career and her family life that she had little time to explore how the expressive therapies might apply to her own life. Colleen took her daughter's question seriously. She sent an invitation to her muse and slowly coaxed her exiled voice back into her life. Realizing that in order to find her own voice, she would need to overcome some serious blocks around singing and artistic expression, Colleen began to study voice and cross-cultural perspectives and healing as well as expressive arts therapies. In her private quest to find her own voice, Colleen discovered that singing and songwriting could be powerful teachers and that singing is indeed a healing resource. To Colleen's surprise, fellow students and community members who heard her sing were so enthralled with her singing that they urged her to share her gifts with the public. She has received international recognition for her song "Nikolay". And she is a fequent speaker on college campuses where she has been asked to help students find the link between creative expression and healing. She is ofen asked to perform her song "This Side of Paradise," and "Hymn for Matthew" at conferences and rallies. Colleen's songs reflect her commitment to social change and healing.

Colleen's pitch-perfect voice is warm, unaffected and honest
author: Denise Jordan Finley
Though the first cut is decidedly country in nature, as the listener journeys through the collection of songs, the character of Colleen's songswriting leans more in the direction of traditional and contemporary folk. There is a strong flavor of Geraghty's Irish roots, with gypsy overtones. Her pitch-perfect voice is both warm and twangy, unaffected, honest, communicative. The thoughtful lyrics are well-crafted and intelligent. Though the work, on the whole waxes serious and philosophical, the prevailing dancing rhythms and melodic sweetness of the solo instruments (performed by Artie Traum, Jay Ungar and Mark Rust, among others) make this album accessibly playable in its entirety....again and again!,

Colleen can write about life's most painful stories in such a way that one feels
author: Barbara Phillips
Colleen can sing about life's most painful stories and memories in such a way that one feels hope and peace and most of all -- not alone. It is compassion at its most passionate and prayer as poetry. Her voice and her lyrics take me to a place "Beyond the Moon" and yet they ground me in the here and now. Her melodies and her music make my body want to move. I love to dance out the stories and feelings as I hear Colleen sing. Many of her songs are my favorites yet each one holds a spark of inspiration and expresses what each of us long for: a desire to express our truth. To hear Colleen sing is truly inspirational.
