Album Notes

First ever recording of the standard Rose 32 clarinet etudes with new piano accompaniments. These beautiful melodies played with rich and intricate piano accompaniments make over an hour of pleasant listening for anyone, and a great study help for clarinetists.

Christopher Hill is Principal Clarinet for the South Dakota Symphony, a Rico Grand Artist, and Conductor of the Sioux Falls Municipal Band.

John Walker is Director of Keyboard Studies and Associate Professor of Music at South Dakota State University, and Principal Keyboard for the South Dakota Symphony.

Dr. Walker composed the complete piano accompaniments to the Rose 32 Etudes for Clarinet in 2003-04, and recorded them on CD for Carl Fischer. This accompaniment CD (Carl Fischer cat. #WF5CD) is widely available online.

Walker has also composed and recorded accompaniments to the Ferling 48 Studies for Oboe or Saxophone on six CDs, which is scheduled to be released by Carl Fischer in 2007.

Hill and Walker recorded the Rose Etudes together in spring, 2006 at South Dakota State University’s Larson Memorial Concert Hall.

Cyrille Rose 32 Etudes for Clarinet
author: Anne Lenoir Ramler
Dear Christopher, I have been playing the Rose Etudes now 42 years and I think that your CD is totally awesome. I am going to get all of my students to buy is. I just bought it on itunes. Every year, in Colorado, the high school students are required to play one or two Rose Etudes from the 32, for chair placement as well as auditioning for various honor and all state bands. For years I have hated this, because it monopolizes all of my teaching into making a \"career\" for myself of trying to get each student to practice their particular etude at \"tempo grave\". It wears me out and the kids hate it. Most of them would rather \"pass\" on All State or honor band rather than to be subjected to an entire summer and semester trying to prepare these etudes. This year it is number 20, with the tempo marked at an eighth note = 180. The study of these etudes for 9th and 10th graders was so laborious, that I had wondered if they could actually be played at the band directors\' recommended tempo. Well, I see that they can! Not only that, I can tell by your clarinet playing, that tempo speed could possibly be added by playing each section (starting with the first 4 bars) very slowly, then getting the 4 bar segment up to tempo and playing it for memory, over and over, in a \"loop\" mode. Then off to the next segment, with this \"add on\" type of study and memorization. I know that my clarinet mentor and friend, Jon Manasse, would agree with me. Thanks to your gorgeous CD, I think I may have more fun teaching these etudes to my students. I know that I can now learn how to play them up to tempo. I can\'t wait to order the accompaniment. Great Job!! Annie Lenoir from Manitou Springs, CO

Excellent CD which I received quickly. My son needed to learn a few of the etudes for an audition. It helped him enormously.
