BIOGRAPHICAL information of CHAKULA/Hardcore Reggae!
CHAKULA'S MUSICAL BIOGRAPHY:
CHAKULA, the band whose name means 'natural food' in the Swahili language, entered the music scene in Jamaica in the Summer of 1994.
Their lively stage performances earned them spots on all of the island's
premier Reggae showcases; including Reggae Sunsplash and Reggae Sumfest among others.
Chakula has made international appearances in the USA, Spain, France and the UK where the band received glowing press reviews.
Chakula has four albums to their credit: LOVE IS THE ANSWER was released in 1996 to some acclaim and the single LOOK IN YOUR EYES enjoyed particularly good and extensive airplay.
Chakula's next album, SAVE THE WORLD was dedicated to children and enjoyed strong airplay and sales throughout the Caribbean. The single, SAY NO TO DRUGS and its accompanying music video, received much rotation on all Jamaican TV stations. Chakula also completed the fourteen-song-set: THE LOVE OF JAH, in 2003.
In 2004 Chakula recorded their most critically acclaimed album to date:HARD CORE REGGAE. It is a widely held opinion, by those who are aware of Chakula's music, that HARD CORE REGGAE represents the true recording sound of this band. Perhaps that is why this CD/album has already sold so many copies, even though it has yet to be officially released and distributed. Chakula comprises seven members. On drums and background vocals is Michael Lewis. On bass is Tony Hibbert. Keybords is handled by Lackland Dunkley and Ray Rochester. Solgie Raymond handles lead guitar. Kerida "Goldilocks" Scott is on vocals and keyboards and Errol Makaya on rhythm guitar and vocals.
The music of Chakula is characterized by strong rhythm sections punctuated with haunting harmonies, set on wicked and subversive drum and bass. Their raunchy, soulful vocals are coloured with insightful and relevant lyrics.
Their songs convey a celebration of oral tradition and give joy to all reggae music lovers. This is a band who has stayed the course.
