Album Notes

The Chapin Sisters are three sisters from New York whose goose-bump inducing music is winning them a growing number of enthusiasts. Their musical style blends traditional folk harmonies with an Indie-rock moodiness (think Crosby Stills Nash & Young meets Cat Power.) The Chapin Sisters' lo-fi originals are gorgeous and melancholy, while their covers are haunting and strangely unfamiliar. Abigail and Lily are daughters of folk singer Tom Chapin (brother of Harry) and Jessica (having grown up with Tom) is writer/director Wes Craven’s daughter. And though they officially started performing with Tom as his special guest, it started years earlier in the back seat of the family car. When their version of Britney Spears' mega-hit "Toxic" caught the attention of Los Angeles DJs Anne Litt and Nick Harcourt and became one of KCRW's most requested songs of 2004, the sisters knew they were on to something. Over the last year or so the girls have been writing "cheeky and dark" songs which are “beautifully memorable” - their performances have been termed "haunting, fierce, coquettish and inspiringly modern." (Seven McDonald - LA Weekly) The self released The Chapin Sisters EP is the result of a year of recording in living room & garage studios and even a couple days at a real pro studio (thanks Elias Sound!) Big shout outs to our producer Michael Fitzpatrick, Elias manager and Chapin Sister booster Scott Cymballa, Raymond Richards for welcoming us at Red Rockets Glare and to everyone else (the list is so very long) who've helped out along the way.

Worth every penny!

I bought the CD after hearing their cover of "Borderline" and seeing their performance of "Let Me Go" on youtube (both songs not on this CD). The entire album is wonderfully unpretentious. Their simplicity reminds me of folk singers of the past, but the honesty and insight in their lyrics is uniquely modern. I enjoyed each song, but "Bird Song" stands out. It is heartbreaking and beautiful; full of a longing and sorrow that brought me to tears the first few times I heard it. I can't wait to hear more from this group and I hope to see them perform.

Beautiful harmony!

I immediately purchased this CD after I saw them live. They kind of remind me of a cross between The Roches and The Story. The harmonies are incredible. My favorites (although they change daily) are Shady River and Bird Song.
