The Chapin Sisters (3 actual sisters) deliver harmonious Alt-Folk songs so love-lorn and seductive it'll make your latest breakup seem almost worth going through...

notes

The Chapin Sisters are three sisters from New York whose goose-bump inducing music is winning them a growing number of enthusiasts.

Their musical style blends traditional folk harmonies with an Indie-rock moodiness (think Crosby Stills Nash & Young meets Cat Power.) The Chapin Sisters' lo-fi originals are gorgeous and melancholy, while their covers are haunting and strangely unfamiliar.

Abigail and Lily are daughters of folk singer Tom Chapin (brother of Harry) and Jessica (having grown up with Tom) is writer/director Wes Craven’s daughter. And though they officially started performing with Tom as his special guest, it started years earlier in the back seat of the family car.

When their version of Britney Spears' mega-hit "Toxic" caught the attention of Los Angeles DJs Anne Litt and Nick Harcourt and became one of KCRW's most requested songs of 2004, the sisters knew they were on to something.

Over the last year or so the girls have been writing "cheeky and dark" songs which are “beautifully memorable” - their performances have been termed "haunting, fierce, coquettish and inspiringly modern." (Seven McDonald - LA Weekly)

The self released The Chapin Sisters EP is the result of a year of recording in living room & garage studios and even a couple days at a real pro studio (thanks Elias Sound!) Big shout outs to our producer Michael Fitzpatrick, Elias manager and Chapin Sister booster Scott Cymballa, Raymond Richards for welcoming us at Red Rockets Glare and to everyone else (the list is so very long) who've helped out along the way.

  • Worth every penny!

I bought the CD after hearing their cover of "Borderline" and seeing their performance of "Let Me Go" on youtube (both songs not on this CD). The entire album is wonderfully unpretentious. Their simplicity reminds me of folk singers of the past, but the honesty and insight in their lyrics is uniquely modern. I enjoyed each song, but "Bird Song" stands out. It is heartbreaking and beautiful; full of a longing and sorrow that brought me to tears the first few times I heard it. I can't wait to hear more from this group and I hope to see them perform.

  • Beautiful harmony!

I immediately purchased this CD after I saw them live. They kind of remind me of a cross between The Roches and The Story. The harmonies are incredible. My favorites (although they change daily) are Shady River and Bird Song.

all the songs are amazing. the harmonies are breath-taking. my favorite songs are girlfriend, bird song, and long journey. the rest are very good as well except for "don't love you"...please put this CD on itunes

  • some songs really cach you, others are okay

the sisters sing really well and for the most part the album sounds great. i don't particularly enjoy the lyrics for girlfriend and have been skipping over that song. bird song is by far my favorite and long journey has surprisingly grown on me. i've really come to enjoy the harmonizing and old fashioned folk feel of it. they are very talented and hope that for their full length they write and sing songs that will fully exemplify their potential as singers/song writers.

  • Outstanding full bodied songs

Waited a long time for a CD after hearing the sisters live in Akron , OH. They're keeping the Chapin name proud with an individual, gutsy sounding album. Keep it up.

I love it for the most part. I am not religious and didn't know that the cd came with a xtian song on it but that's ok because I can just skip over that one. ;)

Love, love, love this CD. Beautiful harmony...could listen all day! I want more from them...I'm (anxiously) patiently waiting.

  • Very nice harmony, good choice of songs, very good folk music.

Hi. I enjoyed the CD. for it's freshness and youth, but actually liked the Doc Watson song the best.I think the voices harmonized best in that song. Do more old folkie songs, Woody Gurthrie and Joan Baez. Listen to Nanci Griffith"Other Voices, Other Rooms". The song"Are You Tired of Me DArling" is similar to yours. Keep going back to the original music, "Amazing Grace" and so forth. You did very well, for new pathways in folk music. Best of luck. Hope you come back to NYC. I missed you at the Living Room.SIncerely, Kathryn

  • Great voices
    author: JD

I love the harmony of voices. The style is very "natural" and basic--bare bones, which is a favorite of mine since I love acoustic simplicity. Only song I didn't like was the "Long Journey." The style and twang is not pleasing to me in any song.

  • Great music - very pleasant to listen to!

My wife and I were fans of Harry Chapin from the minute we heard Taxi on the radio so many years ago and then became great admireers of Tom Chapin after seeing him perform at Harry's concerts and our kids loved him on Big Blue Marble on ABC. We knew the Chapin Sisters would have to be worth the listen and they did not fail us. Fantastic music and harmony! Thank you for continuing the Chapin music legend!!
