#2 in his best of list
author: Bruce BennettThis is his 2nd best CD of his catalog so far. The best is minutes from midnight from 2004. He is a smart songwriter with style and good arrangements.
More up scale/smarter sound than Neil Young, Just as real
author: Thomas M. BurgessI hear a lot of Neil young in him, but he is more up-scale. There is a smarter sound to Ian's playing. He's up-to-date. Just as real.
Wow, I love this CD more and more and more...
author: Michelle WalkerWhat a great CD. I was at a friends house and they were playing it. I found myself completely distracted by the melodies, the simple, soft voice and poetic lyrics that felt as though they were taunting me to listen a little harder. Well, I am. It's great. I now have this one and his latest which is different from this (less country, more alt-country). But, excellent. Beyond excellent. I recommend him very much.
Heavens' Key
author: StarpolishThe beginning of “Heaven’s Key” immediately evokes early Rod Stewart ballads like “I Don’t Want to Talk About It,” but the song truly develops its own personality as it goes. Charles’s voice has the right balance of solidity and newness, bringing out the emotion in the lyric and building to a near-perfect crescendo -- which he surprisingly reins in at the end. If the song were mine to play with, I’d want to hear some large Hammond organ chords offset the piano and highlight the elegiac nature of the piece. But working with what is here, I’m impressed with this confessional country-tinged folk ballad, though I hope he gives the MP3 a re-encoding that isn’t quite so brittle.
Another one!! What a difference.
author: PaulaI just want to say that I'm amazed. The difference from this CD to his latest is pretty subtle but, immediate. It's that he not only digs deep into his soul. These songs are as he says, "observational". Where his latest is internal observations. I enjoy both Wishing Street and as I like to call it, "Minutes". Ian Charles is now part of my day to day life. Next?
Add Ian Charles' name to the list...
author: Chris Kresge- Pro Critic Picks RadioAdd Ian Charles' name to the scroll of great American Singer/Songwriters...he belongs among the list of names like Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Dave Alvin, Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp and others. He may have been born in England but, he is as American a storyteller as has ever existed. Grounded in the roots of Folk, Country, and Heartland Rock-n-Roll, the flame of the genre may very well be passed down to this man. Integrity, honesty, and sentiment seep out of every pore of his songs with passion. This is Americana/Alt-Country. Enjoy it.
Poetic, Beautiful, and Soulful
author: Willow - Dmusic Network A&r / RadioIan Charles' writing style is that of a storyteller. His voice is soothing and rich sounding. It's the kind of music that will become part of your life. I especially enjoy his gospel flavoured songs, his vocal style is outstanding on the track "Confessors' Hymn". The harmonica and organ licks are a perfect accompaniment to Ian's voice. "Heavens' Key" another favorite of mine, is a song written for a friend of Ian's. Laced with heartache, Ian's voice is filled with the ache and longing that comes with heartbreak. "Downshift", has a Steve Earle feeling to it. I am pulling for this artist; he has the drive, passion, and determination to go all the way.
Believe!
author: John LonerganEach song has a sense of timelessness, and is infused with the traditions of Country and Folk. The result is a first class set of observational songwriting and storytelling. Every Morning is for me the standout track although there is stiff competition both from Downshift and Heavens'Key. The Twang button is firmly pressed on La La La La (a true story), I Will Ride...,is as expansive as the desert sky it describes and New Ticket could be slipped onto the first Counting Crows album without anybody noticing. Confessors' Hymn is pure Memphis Gospel- A plea to live in a place of humble beauty. This CD suggests Ian Charles is already there.
Man, Oh Man, Can this guy sing!
author: Mark T. GouldWishing street, Ian Charles' 3rd album since 1995, melds a soulful sound and delivery with a smorgasbord of delight tunes. Every song on this great CD tells a story. Ian Charles is clearly a songwriter and singer deserving of much greater and wider recognition, based on this strong collection.
Short and sweet...this is a really great cd!
author: Chicky's BoyWishing Street features great songs by an outstanding performer. Short and sweet...this is a really great cd!
Timeless
author: Erik Balkey (singer-songwriter)This music is timeless. "Downshift" has all the makings of a modern standard. This song will not leave your head. A great CD!
Riding on the Song Cycles
author: Joshua MamisIan Charles latest release, Wishing Street, hums along with his most consistent sound to date, perhaps helped by the incisive producing of Crit Harmon. It's got more twang and folkiness than his earlier work, without ditching pop's more syncopated rhythms. Which serves his contemplative, personal songs well.
Once in awhile someone(an artist, poet, songwriter) comes along...
author: Sherry Phillips- New Muse America Newsletter- Port Charlotte, FOnce in awhile a very special CD comes in to my little, uncluttered office. Once in awhile a voice is heard in passing, a song is heard that sticks with you, an artist comes along that takes you to a place where you never thought you could go anymore. In today's fast paced music world. Everything in your face, everything road rage, So much whining and wannabee "something they'll never be" songwriting pumped into our psyche by pre-programmed, clue-less mass media. The few who come through with a head held high. Are the survivors. "Permanent". Ian Charles is in the rare category of such luminaries, Guy Clark, John Gorka, Mickey Newbury come to my mind. This is a very special recording by a very special "once in a generation" songwriter. Ian Charles. The CD is Wishing Street.
Can you hear the music in the night? Come on Listen...
author: Micheal CascagneThis is a cool album! I find myself going back and listening to it over and over. I have a 5 disc changer and this one has'nt left it for two weeks. It is one of those nightime Cd's. Alot of songwriters kind of fall of the mark halfway through. This is just chock full of everything you'd want to hear and with a soulful, almost ghostly tone. Right through from it's Country/Folk start to it's Gospel blues finish. Join in........ Hallellujah!! and Listen!
Ian Charles........Cd review of the week!!
author: Tom Netherland"Ian Charles isn't exactly country. But, so what? Unlike most of Nashville's Majority,Ian Charles does'nt try to fool us. Thank goodness, an honest artist, and one who walks a straight line somewhere between Folk and Rock. Ian Charles' rich portraits of wanderlust(Eastern Standard Time), Meaningful memories (Every Morning), and a lost and lonely existence (Downshift) come straight from the heart, and a pen that's more than able to relate life's nuances. Possessed with a voice that aches(Heavens'Key) with reality on his tongue, Ian Charles' substantial talent lies somewhere between mainstreams errant radar, and that's good. Like today's Steve Earle or Gordon Lightfoot in the 70's how does one categorize Ian Charles? Try foot deep in the heart of honest-to-goodness wonderful music"
I love this disc. I would recommend it to anyone
author: S. BerdwallI have been following Ian Charles' music since his 1st cd. That cd was really exciting because it was raw and loose in the sense that the playing was really energetic, and came from alot of different places. In his development I have heard a great amount of focus. But, still a loose free feeling to the writing and playing. I think that this is a perfect album or body of work. You see, Ian Charles is always going to a new place. you never know what is next so the first song is different from the last but in some special way born of the same thought because that is where he is at the time. Wishing Street has a feeling of travel, internally as well as externally. Emotionally and spiritually. I can not say enough about how great this is. I would recommend this to anyone who likes something with class and depth and who likes writing with a sense of history. I would compare Ian Charles to no other songwriter. These songs will sound excellent in 10 years.Timeless.
