Listen to the record...The completion of a creative triad:
Wishing Street (2000)
Minutes From Midnight (2004)
Born Right Inside (2008)
"Born Right Inside" is Ian Charles' 6th solo album released since 1995.
There is an ease about the songs. Catchy, to the point and after learning his craft from the best songwriters in the world. He has made the most accessible album of his career...so far anyway.
The songs are: A series of portraits that link together and are equally divided into a subconscious two sided record. You know, like the design of a vinyl record. With a first and second side.
Previously designing the 2000 release, "Wishing Street" in somewhat the same way. With the feeling that it gives a CD a great consistency and flow.
We are all, "Born Right Inside".
The record starts where his last record left off. On the road to where exactly? "Soul Running". On the run from yourself. It's not an easy ride.
Next, "The Name Of The Game". Lessons learned...or so you think.
Look around. What do we need? What have we learned? Where are we going?
These questions get asked and answered.
"Listen To The Record".
Ironically ending with the prophetic "Exit".
Now there is the looking ahead.

When I first listened to Ian Charles' latest release, Born Right Inside. I was slightly thrown by the difference in sound from his last CD, 2004's Minutes From Midnight. There was a directness that the aforementioned built on to create a kind of psychedelic alternative country meets pink floyd kind of listening experience. One which I really enjoyed. On this new release, Born Right Inside, Ian is working with a core band that is his present touring unit. The band brings a crispness to the new songs and allows his very fine voice and lyrics to bring the listener to the forefront with him.
He is certainly one of the finest lyricists I have heard in the independent songwriter field in quite some time. His melodies are excellent and suit the songs perfectly.
I wish there was more songs to the collection. After 4 years since his previous full length. There are only 10 songs featured. The CD runs at a swift 37 or so minutes. I would have liked about 10 more minutes of music to round things out even more than is already evident. Let's hope there is more songs hiding somewhere to get another release in less than 4 years. Otherwise, I think this is his best CD so far and it completes a trio of excellence that started in 2000 with his breakthrough release, Wishing Street.

Charles has one of the most solid songwriting abilities around which makes you question why all radio friendly "popular" music is on the radio and is "popular". Melodies and harmonies blend effortlessly together, leaving smoky-trail memories of choruses and hooks in your mind, all tucked up in a roots-y, Americana sound thyat puts many of these new school indie rock, twang-ternative bands to shame. Nothing too rough and nothing too sentimentally sappy. A nice record. Well recorded, well mixed, well written and well done. Standout track: Tough choice but I'll go with "Anyway"
