Bach was an inventor of sound. In addition to his innovatively complex harmonies, counterpoint, and melodic voicing, he used the organ to astonish, allowing the instrument to “breathe” with unconventional stop configurations. Through transcription we often hear the emotional content of a composer’s work sublimely infused within the timbre of alternative orchestration. On the other side of the scale there is the quest for authenticity through performance on traditional or period instruments. Whether it is through Bach’s experimentation, our contemporary expectations, nostalgic recreation, or transcription, the fundamental significance of the music is what shines through. This work is my effort to capture that significance and convey the spirit of Bach through the infinite sound spectrum of 21st century synthesizers.
