Album Notes

After years of playing live around the St Louis area with great success, Charles Wells is finally ready to release his first album. It's My Turn is the culmination of hard work, natural talent and the innate passion of a man steeped in the musical heritage of the sixties and seventies, the groups he has played in, and the gospel music he was brought up with.

"This CD has an old-school R&B feel," says Charles of his debut. "It also has a flavour of blues and a little of country. It has a very earthy sound. I've tried to bring back the days when artists used horns and strings on their projects to enhance their groove."

"I have always felt music in my spirit. I started at such an early age, my heart has never known any other way to express itself."

It was at the age of four that Charles Wells began singing gospels and spirituals in his uncle's church in St Louis. Soon he was in the church choir performing solos and touring up and down the grand old Mississippi.

Influenced by radio in the sixties and seventies, his first band was called "We Friends," performing at talent shows and the like. Thus began Charles' career in music, from performing at private events, country clubs, casinos and local clubs. Currently his band "Music Box" is one of the most sought after bands in the region.

Charles counts among his influences the "Motown" sound and the classic artist of soul and rock n' roll. He has a solid foundation in recording and performing. He has worked with names as illustrious as Michael Buble and Mary Wilson of "The Supremes."

All this has led to a firm idea of where he wants his music to go. "I would like to bring you the song that no one ever forgets," he says. "My vision is the music; I have to channel it to you. Only then, is it honest. If you ain't feeling it, then it ain't happenin'."

Charles has received considerable critical acclaim for his efforts:

"Somehow, Wells doesn't want to nail himself down. The title track belongs unequivocally in the country music clubs in the American South, while "Struck Like Lightning" is steeped in the Blues, and "I Got You" should play on one of the famous Soul Weekends. This last song, as well as "My Little Feel Good" are joyful, exuberant, and positive, and simply make the listener happy in his soul. This doesn't come from nowhere – he's played in diverse band projects in various genres." www.soulsite.de

Anyone with any sense of soul or blues, would do well to check out It's My Turn.

The real deal
author: Chris
It's apparent on the first listen that Wells has learned the essentials of the musical genres he has navigated through in his career thus far. He has a finely nuanced style that gets to the core of the song, regardless of idiom. My personal favorite is the bluesy "Struck Like Lightning", and the soul-flavored "Cross My Mind" and "My Little Feel Good" are joyful romps from beginning to end. The horns and backing vocals are applied with a masterful touch throughout. In my opinion, the only missteps on this disc are 1) the female co-lead vocalist on "Every Step of the Way" has a voice that, while undeniably competent, does not complement Wells' very well, and 2) the closing track "All Alone Again" veers dangerously close to Disney-theme territory in its production. That being said, this CD makes a good addition to any collection that values soulful vocals.

Really different stuff!
author: Barb
I am giving this cd a high score for originality. The songs are great and interesting, and I expect to hear them on the radio. The song My Little Feel Good is my favorite, and I'm sure it will be a hit. Really different stuff, but not so different that it is weird or unpalatable. I like singers who are gritty and soulful like Michael Bolton, but without hurting my ears. Charles Wells, on this cd is just that, and the songs have a lot of spirit. Some singers don't seem to feel like they are putting a song over unless they make it sound like they are straining their voices, but this singer gives intensity and energy, but with a commanding level of smoothness. It doesn't hurt to listen to him. I'm really glad I bought this. This deserves the eye-level shelf of my music collection.
