The real deal

It's apparent on the first listen that Wells has learned the essentials of the musical genres he has navigated through in his career thus far. He has a finely nuanced style that gets to the core of the song, regardless of idiom. My personal favorite is the bluesy "Struck Like Lightning", and the soul-flavored "Cross My Mind" and "My Little Feel Good" are joyful romps from beginning to end. The horns and backing vocals are applied with a masterful touch throughout. In my opinion, the only missteps on this disc are 1) the female co-lead vocalist on "Every Step of the Way" has a voice that, while undeniably competent, does not complement Wells' very well, and 2) the closing track "All Alone Again" veers dangerously close to Disney-theme territory in its production. That being said, this CD makes a good addition to any collection that values soulful vocals.

Really different stuff!
author: Barb
I am giving this cd a high score for originality. The songs are great and interesting, and I expect to hear them on the radio. The song My Little Feel Good is my favorite, and I'm sure it will be a hit. Really different stuff, but not so different that it is weird or unpalatable.
I like singers who are gritty and soulful like Michael Bolton, but without hurting my ears. Charles Wells, on this cd is just that, and the songs have a lot of spirit.
Some singers don't seem to feel like they are putting a song over unless they make it sound like they are straining their voices, but this singer gives intensity and energy, but with a commanding level of smoothness. It doesn't hurt to listen to him. I'm really glad I bought this. This deserves the eye-level shelf of my music collection.
