Charlie Appelstein, M.S.W. is a nationally prominent youth care specialist and author whose primary focus is on working with children and youth with emotional and behavioral problems. President of Appelstein Training Resources, LLC, Charlie trains and consults all over the United States as well as internationally, with treatment facilities, foster care programs, parent groups, schools, and detention centers. He has authored three youth care books that are widely used within the field, including The Gus Chronicles: Reflections from an Abused Kid and No Such Thing as a Bad Kid: Understanding and Responding to the Challenging Behavior of Troubled Children and Youth.

Described by Robert Lieberman, former President of the American Association of Children’s Residential Centers, as “the best youth care trainer in the country,” Charlie is a highly sought after speaker. He is a frequent keynote presenter and seminar leader. Charlie brings great
passion, wisdom, and humor to the podium. His most popular talk is titled The Glass Ain’t Half Full, Heck it’s Overflowing – The Power of a Strength-Based Approach in Reshaping the Lives of At-Risk Children and Youth.

Charlie is a strong proponent of using a strength-based, positive approach in dealing with children and
youth. Strength-based practice is an emerging approach to child rearing that focuses on what kids do right and their innate capacities to lead productive lives.

In recent years, Charlie has devoted a great deal of time and energy towards using rhythm and music to help parents and professionals guide the young people in their care. His first CD,One-Line Raps for Girls and Chaps, has helped numerous children and youth throughout North America to better self-manage their actions.
