Charlie Don't Shake are rock and roll fingerpainters. They take country blues and old school R&B songs and make grand messes out of them with meandering guitars, 80's keyboards and space echo. The result is gritty, super-rhythmic music that demands to be part of your next sing-along.
Charlie Don't Shake morphed out of the Chicago-and-Lansing-based band The South. Originally formed in 2000 with Craig Schmidt and Jeremy Whitwam, the band spent most of 2002 and 2003 tightening their sound and pulling their musical tongues roughly halfway out of their cheeks. The result is the album The South Will Take Your Blues Away, released in April of 2004 on Rexrode Records.
Craig and Jeremy recruited the help of group members from various regional bands such as The Fuzz, and Rexrode Records label mates Rosetta and Flatfoot.
The South Will Take Your Blues Away was recorded at El Estudio Del Cacto Rojo in Lansing Michigan. The album was mastered by Brad Blackwood at Euphonic Masters in the home of rock n' roll, Memphis Tennessee.

I've listened to this album many times, trying to figure out its secrets. Not only is it great on the first listen, it gets better everytime. At Night, At Sea is one of the most beautiful songs ever and always makes my eyes tear up when I hear it. Aragon Blues and Julie Money rock with so much swagger that Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Whitwam are giving Mr. Jagger and Mr. Richards a run for their money. You really gotta let this music soak into your body and spirit!

Rock 'n Roll the way it was meant to be.

A thoughtfully put-together album that takes its listener down the familiar (and beloved) paths of country, blues, and rock ‘n roll. Lyrical content and musicianship excel here, while the music maintains a subtle maturity talented musicians struggle to achieve. Bonus points for the use of piano throughout the album as its restrained use fills out the sound and makes good songs great.

Great Rock and Roll.

Tremendous album crossing Reed and Jagger vocals with beautiful guitar lines and driving rhythms. The careful buildup of the first two tracks to the breakout 3rd track single is topped only by the one two punch of the fantastic At Night At Sea and the incredibly catchy Julie Money. The album ends with with spaced out clever soundscapes, eerily captivating melodies and the perfect reverse outro. The numbers of genres crossed is matched only by the number of styles mastered. On the counrty twang of Big Fat Star or the great sing-along Ode to Stanley Booth or the driving blues of Heaps of Dirt, Charlie Don't Shake gets it right everytime. Not only are At Sea and Aragon two of the best songs of the year, the Album as whole lays claim to one of my top spots as well. So if there's a chance to hear them, you'd better look out, and if they holler, stop and listen,you'll likely be knocked out. What a bad review ending, sorry, great album though!
