Album Notes

charlottesville tend to focus on down-tempo, melodic music. often melancholy, always lush and inviting, their songs strive to capture the emotions of the listener with both acoustic and digital sounds, blended with intelligent lyrics to create a warm and entrancing whole. every song should tell a story, and charlottesville have many to tell.

charlottesville were formed in 1999 by miles fender and iris lapalme, and are most often compared to a hybrid of the red house painters, radiohead and low. the band was born mainly out of miles' necessity for a change in musical style following his relocation from england to san francisco; formerly, he had fronted the british goth rock band 'earth calling angela'. now, after the release of the critically acclaimed promo 'random acts of blindness', and the newly released full-length album 'the shark who pulled a mussel', charlottesville are proving that there is still a place for subtlety in today's brash and fast-paced world.

"Solid lyrics, inviting voice and guitar style. This album is easily recommended to anyone who enjoys discovering new slowcore bands."

Tranquil Soul-Uplift
author: Paul Broome

From the opening strains of 'Chicken Coop for the Soul' you'll be sucked in. The music just seems to ebb and flow effortlessly, it takes you to lots of places - but it's never pushy. The vast array of instrumentation dovetails together perfectly, and Miles' voice tops it all off - full of emotion, and sincerity. It's hard to pin down the influences, but if you like any combination of these, then you'll love this: Red House Painters, (late) Cure, Mazzy Star, His Name Is Alive, Elbow, Cranes, (late) Lloyd Cole... This is an outstanding first album, and bodes well for things to come. Buy it now!
