IT'S MOTOWN - REVISITED
JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

This collection started out as just a song . . . no kidding. While in the studio working on the Miracles classic 'If You Can Want' for my last cd 'Back To The Groove' J (my producer) and I got into this long winded conversation about the real Motown jams. The songs the bands played, the 45's the clubs pumped, etc. Well before the night ended we jammed out two dozen or so tunes and relived the magic of AM radio. In other words real soul, Motown gold. We had so much fun remembering, not just the songs but the people, expecially the unseen heroes, that we decided to record this cd in honor of the musicians, technicians, writers, arrangers, artists, heck everyone at Hitsville for making an entire world smile, if but for a moment, ( a 45 yr moment), with the music they created. A thousand thanks to everyone at Motown but especially the Funks (The Funk Brothers), from Benny thru Beans ( whom I studied from afar) and Harvey Fuqua, Marv T (Tarplin), Ronnie White, Smokey Robinson, Sonny Burke, Bob "Boogie" Bowles & Earl Bryant who let me see up close. Also to Bobby Jay (Teenagers fame & WCBS radio New York)& his wife Cynthia and Aki Aleong my very first outside producers, thank you always. And of course Mr Berry Gordy and family for starting it all, Hitsville that is, 'The Sound of Young America'.

Special thanks to Dr Licks (Allen Slutsky) for taking the story from the streets of Grand Blvd thru the screen to the world.

CHAZZ DIXON - Hitsville...The House That Berry Built (US Da Soul Recordings, 2004)

Smiling Faces - Choosy Begger - More Love - What Love Has Joined Together - You Sure Love To Ball - Here I Go Again - If You Let Me - Medley: The Only One Who Loves You / Dr. Feelgood - You Must Be Love - What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted - Does Your Mama Know About Me - Nitty Gritty - That Won't Stop Me (From Loving You)

It was only back in the Summer that I was enthusing over his superb "Back To The Groove" set, and was very surprised to receive this CD so soon, hot on the heals. I must say that hot is a very appropriate word to describe this album. I have to say that I am sick to the back teeth with artists doing albums of cover versions and bemoan the whole pop idol thing. However, when an exceptional album arises then it is with gusto that I will trumpet it. I looked at the titles on this CD and this alone aroused my curiosity. We are not simply dealing with the obvious classic pop hits that we all know and love, but we have a selection of superb Motown tunes that are not so obvious, especially from a more commercial point of view. Secondly what took my breath away was the sheer quality of the album. This has been conceived with love, deep respect, knowledge and a perfect attention to detail. Chazz Dixon and his producer, J, have not simply covered these songs in some dreary tribute format, but have ripped the guts of the songs apart and have recreated them with the same passion, ear and vogue of the original hitmakers themselves. Motown was a company borne out of frustration with the recording industry, and so too it seems has Da Soul Recordings. It is this raw frustration and overflowing talent, brimming optimism and dedication to their listeners, their craft and the heritage of quality black music that these gentlemen have entered the studio. I suppose that what we are looking at here is a seriously essential album. Imagine Smokey Robinson walking into a studio making a cover of Motown songs in a modern style, with traditional sensibilities, then that is the essence of what "Hitsville..." is all about. I love every song on display here. The enjoyment is hearing the new arrangements of old classics, the meticulous and the smooth, sensuous, delicate vocal skills that Chazz uses to caress the arrangements. Some feel smooth as silk, others forceful with a real urgency of grabbing our attention. I for one was grabbed, big time from the word go with "Smilg Faces Sometimes". I have not heard a cover version of this classic by The Undisputed Truth covered so well. This could be Smokey singing this. Unbelievable. With Chazz' definate similarity to a Smokey Robinson it is not surprising that a fair few of the legend's hits are covered: "Choosy Begger"; "Here I Go Again", "The One Who Really Loves You", "You Must Be Love" and so on. However, my favourite moments are not these, great as they are. I have heard various covers of Marvin Gaye over the years, some better than others, but I cannot enthuse more about the exquistite, beautiful, original take on Marvin's "You Sure Love To Ball". Wow! This is what the doctor ordered! His version, also, of Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers' "Does Your Mama Know About Me" is simply sublime. I can't thank you enough for this, guys. Great, great song and admirably executed. There is a slight Zapp feel with the synth/vocals in the backing. This is a true Motown classic and is often ignored or forgotten. We are treated to an original, new, song at the end, "That Won't Stop Me (From Loving You)" and that is excellent, too, closing this CD splendidly. I cannot recommend this enough and many I have exposed this to have been very impressed with it. This will soon be available for Christmas from CD Baby. And rightly so. Essential.

REVIEWS

The modern day Smokey!
author: Tim
This CD is off the charts! I just received it from CD Baby after reading about Chazz and other Da' Soul Recording artists from the soulfuldetroit.com website's forum. Many have done Motown covers, none as good as this. Not sure why Michael McDonald's sub-par Motown recordings are getting so much play, when they really should be playing Chazz's CD. Mr. Dixon is simply the modern day Smokey Robinson. His voice is very Smokeyesque, but in his own unique way. His cover's of the Smokey songs here are impeccable, yet again done in his own way! And I believe his cover of What Love Has Brought Us Together is better than the original! He throws on his own tune at the end of the CD and it is sweet! Many, many highlights including a great cover of Smiling Faces (Sometimes) and Choosey Beggar, which are both outstanding. I haven't heard a so-called new artist (Chazz has been around for awhile, however) this good in years! A must by for lovers of real soul and R & B!

This CD is sooooooooo sexy and sensual with Chazz putting his own stamp on each

This CD is EXCELLENT!!!! I am usually not a fan of cover songs but Chazz Dixon has done the original artists proud. They are as good, if not better, than the original tracks. The cuts are sooooooooo sexy and sensual. The songs sound modern with a smooth, jazzy feel to them and are just as SOULFUL as the originals. This CD will be played often in my house and I am telling my friends about it - it's the best CD I've heard in quite a while as a fan of old school soul. I can't wait to get Chazz's CD "Crackin'" coming out this month. My compliments to all who worked on this superb albumn!!

"MOTOWN" HAS TRULY COME TO "MILTOWN"
author: RICARDO
This CD is quite simply one of the very best cover projects that I've ever heard... The silky smooth vocals from the one and only Chazz Dixon are nothing less than ethereal... The production and musicianship of Two Brothers Records Founder "J" are more than worthy of paying tribute to the music made famous by the legendary "Funk Brothers" of Motown fame... These are not your typical "run of the mill" variety covers of Motwon hits... No, these are some of Motowns best "Under the radar" hits!! True connoisseurs of the Motown sound will appreciate the love & care taken to bring back these not quite so well known songs to life... To the casual listener, get ready to get down!! When you purchase this CD, listen to it prior to reading the credits and see if you can pick out the original song included on the CD!! Chazz & "J" have taken these songs to a whole different level while staying true to the originators... Hitsville's legendary "Funk Brothers!" Stand out tracks for me include, What Becomes of the Brokenhearted, You Must Be Love, & That Won't Stop Me (From loving you) I applaud this latest effort from Da' Soul Recordings Artist Chazz Dixon & highly reccomend it.

TIMELESS!!!!
author: G-Money
Where were you when you heard your first Motown record? This cd puts you right back inside that time capsule re-introducing a musical sound and vision that shaped the American music culture some years ago, with a feel that has been imitated by artists of all genre's for the past thirty years. Chazz does top shelf work on this release taking the listener down memory lane, or shall I say, history class on the pulse of not only Black American but American music. this is a must have!!!!!!!!!
