Magical Mystery Man
Billy Chernoff and Dean Phillips wrote all 10 songs on this new collection. The project was recorded in two of Alberta's well-known studios, Hamiltone Productions and Sundae Sound. Most of the tracks have, to my ear at least, more of a classic country sound than what I'd call pure western, but the lyrics and storyline do qualify several of the tracks for airplay on Spirit Of The West.
Several great musicians add their talents including Dave Hamilton, whose Hamiltone Studios are well-known for a good country sound on acoustic and electric guitars. Jeff Bradshaw is featured on steel guitar and dobro; Dean Marshall on fiddle and Keith Flowen on piano. It's a bigger group than you'd find around the average campfire. Ron Casat plays a Hammond B3 organ, Bill Hills supplies harmonica sounds and Phil Hall sings background vocals.
Songs like Your Cowboy Loves You and Rodeo Miles will have folks flocking to the dance floor. My Old Compadres and Me has some great images of the Porcupine Hills and foothills of Southern Alberta. That one and Hard Living Cowboy would be my favorite tracks. Well-written songs, nicely sung, backed up by good musicians.

Billy Chernoff-CD-Magical Mystery Man -In Review
A Country Album With Class
By John Gavin, Wednesday, September 29, 2004
Billy Chernoff, country music singer/songwriter from British Columbia, has recently released a new country music CD, entitled, Magical Mystery Man. It is a collection of 10 songs, all written by Billy with Dean Phillips. His writing styles remind you of the writings of Tom T. Hall with the music like the swing music of Red Steagall. The songs pertain to wide open spaces, cowboys, rodeos and pieces of life. The most interesting aspect of Billy's singing is that is down-to-earth and believable.
Billy has been singing for 40 years. The album paints the real picture of today's tough life, presented with an impecable sound capturing the rich history of our forefathers, up to the changes we all face living in the 21st century. Billy' music is described as, Straight Up Rocking North American Country music.
Here are the song titles; Down At The Rodeo-Your Cowboy Loves You-Somebody's Baby-Magical Mystery Man-Even Poets Grow Old-Rodeo Miles-American Cowboy-My Old Compadres And Me-Stopped Into A Small Town and Hard Living Cowboy.
The CD is on the Old Hippy Record Label and produced by Dave Hamilton and recorded in Calgary. A very good album and Atlantic Seabreeze highly recommends the CD for your record collection.

Down At The Rodeo / Your Cowboy Loves You / Somebody’s Baby / Magical Mystery Man / Even Poets Grow Old / Rodeo Miles / American Cowboy / My Old Compadres And Me / Stopped Into A Small Town / Hard Living Cowboy
Billy Chernoff is a veteran singer / song- writer, based out of Grand Forks, B.C. who has been on the music scene for four decades, first charting in the late 60’s (as Billy Charne) with a series of Top 10 singles for RCA. Every so often Chernoff surfaces with a new album; this latest collection is particularly interesting.
All of the songs on the album were written by Billy Chernoff with his music partner Dean Phillips. Chernoff’s writing, and the delivery of the material combines the ‘story-telling’ style of Tom T. Hall, with the Texas swing music of Red Steagall. It makes for a good listen. The songs deal with wide open spaces, cowboys and rodeos, and slices of life. Chernoff’s vocal work is not flashy, just down-to-earth and believable, and sometimes that’s where it counts most.
Some of the highlight tracks here come in the rodeo-flavored western tunes like American Cowboy, Down At The Rodeo, Your Cowboy Loves You, Rodeo Miles, and Hard Living Cowboy, which is given a Waylon & Willie “Good Hearted Woman” feel. Also strong is the two-step My Old Compadres And Me, and the story song Stopped Into A Small Town.
The album’s title track, Magical Mystery Man is something akin to what Tom T. Hall spun in his early career songwriting; and although a little overly-sentimental it has a special message that could generate some special attention.
Magical Mystery Man was produced by highly acclaimed guitarist / producer Dave Hamilton and recorded at studios in Calgary. The album also boasts some dynamite artwork and graphics, the best seen on a ‘Cancountry’ indie release in some time.

To whom it may concern ,
Each year Vold Audio personnel have the opportunity to supply sound systems and production to hundreds of rodeo and roughtstock events throughout Western Canada. Constantly on the lookout for new musical material to use, we were very pleased this year to discover Billy Chernoff’s "Magical Mystery Man" . We presently use six of the cd tracks in our pre-show / post-show rotation ; they are particularly
well suited to traditional rodeo and it’s fans. It’s great to hear new material that will fit in with the likes of Ian Tyson, Chris LeDoux and Jerry Jeff Walker.
