"Back in the early nineties Boston, Massachusetts
was firmly positioned on the rock n' roll map thanks
to the likes of AEROSMITH, EXTREME, and an up
and coming band called ATUNGA. For those of you
who used to subscribe to 'Take it' online Magazine,
(back in our youth) alarm bells may be ringing at the
mention of the latter. No stranger to our pages, ATUNGA
were a perfectly formed four piece fronted by singer/
songwriter Greg Cherone. Edgy, bluesy, funky they were all
that Boston grown bands did best. Sadly, scenes change and
ATUNGA, along with many others became a casualty of grunge.
However, you can't keep a good man down and a decade later
Greg has seen fit to launch onto the world his interpretation of classic rock. Here are five solid tracks of honest good quality rock songs that represent a previously untapped side of Mr. Cherone. Now a husband and father,what appears to be present in this offering is a maturity and reflection not present in Greg's earlier work. Indeed, the entire production shows a strength of character that can only be derived from a greater sense of what you have to offer the world. All of the songs are stripped back to basics; Greg obviously no longer feeling the need to hide behind the bravado of full on heavy rock, instead choosing to embrace a warmer, mellower and altogether more innocent format to his songwriting; with the emphasis placed heavily on vocal harmonies. It's all there in one tight little package: the anthemic 'Birth of Rock n'Roll,' the ode to skirt chasing 'Cara Ann,' blues-rock ballad 'Some Kind of Amnesia,' the AOR of 'Just Good Friends' and finally, the finest of the five, 'A Humarock Song'; conjuring up hazy memories of summers past; definately one to cruise to with the top down (do people actually still say that?!). All of the songs are written by Greg and composer/percussionist John Saliba. Except for 'A Humarock Song' which sees Greg collaborating with his brother Gary. Indeed, all of the Cherone brothers are present here as Mark takes guitar credits on four of the tracks.

"OK! Let's make this clear once and for all.
Yes! Greg Cherone is the brother of Gary
(Ex-Van Halen/Extreme), and No! He's not
trying to sound like his brother of Extreme.
They are obviously both inspired by the late 70's
rock of Queen and such. Not that strange either
since they were brought up in the same house.
They were bound to hear what the other was
playing on the stereo .. one way or another
(turn down that crap you piece of ... ).
Boston folks may also remember him up
front for the band Atunga. These songs are
all of good quality. Musicians include yet
another Cherone on lead guitar (Mark of
okpanic), Stephen Powell on bass, and
Steve Catizone on piano.
Greg's voice is definitely up there along
with his bro' and the music is heavily
inspired by the 70's. It's not heavy metal
for sure but rather basic rock with soul
and warmth."
