What? Celtic-tinged folk music by a nice Jewish girl from Montreal? And she's a percussionist who sings and plays all sorts of stringed instruments? This has got to be heard to be believed...

notes
Cheryl was born in Montreal, Canada, where she studied classical percussion at McGill University. During her ten-year stint as a member of the Yiddish Theatre of Montreal, Cheryl toured the US, Canada, Europe and Russia, then Norway, England and Scotland with the Lakeshore Concert Band. After THAT, Cheryl decided to let the world come to her for awhile - she moved to New York City - and became percussionist extraordinaire for half the singer/songwriters in the Tri-State area, a handful of Middle Eastern belly dancers and a Klezmer band. How's that for diversity?
THE OCEAN'S DOORWAY, in contrast, is an intensely personal project from start to finish. In addition to writing all the songs and playing most of the instruments, Cheryl served as her own producer and chief engineer for this album. Using her own material as a springboard, she learned the skills she later applied as producer and/or engineer on numerous projects for others.
"I never imagined that songs I wrote for myself, to express the inexpressible, would speak to listeners in such a personal way. To me, finding the universal in the intimate is what songwriting is all about."
Since finishing this project, Cheryl has gone on to become a founding member of the acoustic quartet CROSS CONTINENTAL RAILROAD, thus bringing her music to an even wider audience with full instrumentation and vocal harmony. As a follow-up to THE OCEAN'S DOORWAY, Cheryl and CROSS CONTINENTAL RAILROAD are currently in recording sessions for their debut CD, due for release on Elizabeth Records in the summer of 2001. Stay tuned...

God I love her stuff!
author: Jeremy KrevatThis is the must own CD. Along with her work with CC Railroad, this is the folk music of the decade. Every song is filled with emotion and captivating melodies that force you to sing along. I was almost kicked off a flight on United Airlines because of "A Greater Scheme". I did not realize I was singing along so loudly until the complaint from 1st class was delivered to the back of the plane where I was sitting. If all the world is a stage, then Cheryl belongs right in the center of the world.
Sweet and heartfelt
author: Jerry Baldassaro Of The BridgeCheryl puts in her music all the passion and experience of her extaordinary life. Great body of work.
Great CD, you can play it all day
author: Matthew KrevatThis is one of 3 or 4 CDs that will likely be playing in my office at any given time. The songs tug at your heart, but leave you feeling refreshed and cleansed, never down. Unfortunately, my favorite song on the CD doesn't have an online sample linked. "They Were Then" is a song about the effect the previous generation had on us, and laments that they won't be around to influence future generations. Every time I hear it I am reminded that it is up to me to pass my grandfather's stories to my children. I cannot recommend this album highly enough.
