Chicken Hot Rod was formed in 1969 when two mudholes were crushed under pressure during a seismic event and cracked open to produce a bluegrass band with an unpredictable fault line.
From that day 'til this, Chicken Hot Rod contains the following:
* Jim Whitley, banjo and the group's daddy
* Mark Wingate, fiddler extra ordinary and wearer of the largest shoes
* Lizard Thom Case, guitar player and farmer outstanding in his field
* Darrell Gray, bassist and the group's funny man. (We don't mean he's a comedian, just sorta funny.) Darrell is also keeper of the Living Chicken.
Chicken Hot Rod recorded an album in 1972 which has since been certified Plywood, and recently re-released it yet again once more to an unsuspecting public.
The first bluegrass band to become a member of the National Coffeehouse Circuit, they performed in 26 states at over 200 colleges and universities. Due to this experience, they have all learned to read and write.
Never satisfied with the status quo, they have recently become old and fat.
Based in North Carolina and Tennessee, the band is currently touring Interstate 40 and playing for weddings, wakes, confirmations, goat ropings, snake rollings, ashtray emptyings, marbles tournaments and bluegrass festerings.
Power to the Chicken!

Funny as all get out

This is one of the best albums I have heard. While it has been out for a long time, it is a classic in the world of bluegrass. I first met Tom, Darrell, Mark & Jim way back in the 1970's. They are one of the funniest groups that I remember from my childhood. Thier antics on stage are hilarious.

Rare & Valuable

Jim Whitley gave me a copy of this CD after a small festival in White Lake NC. I was absolutely mesmerized by the groups performance and only wanted to compliment him. We were staying in the same hotel across the street from the festival and I saw him walking alone across the parking lot. I approached him and offered my compliments. Being the southern gentleman, he responded by offering me a free copy of the CD. Again, I was absolutely blown away. He didn\'t know I was a Bluegrass Radio Producer and that he\'d just given me some great material that I have featured on the show several times.
Unfortunately, I loaned my CD to a friend and it came back damaged. This is a RARE CD and if I ever get another, it\'ll never leave the vault.
Listen to the Old Time Radio Show track on the CD. Jim\'s creative genius really shines on this track.
The musicianship is superb, the songs are unique and now that Jim is gone we\'ll never get more. This is certainly one to add to your collection.
I thank you Jim for the pleasure of meeting you and watching you perform at least once in my life.
Sincerely,
Brian McNeal

Chicken Hotrod was our signature band when we ran a bar called Muthers. They made us a ton of money and brought us and a lot of other people tons of happiness. Their music has stood the test of time and I hope that it'll keep making people happy for a loooong time to come. Music is distilled emotion. J&D

Great Bluegrass

Darrell Gray is my uncle who plays the bass in this group. I love the cd, my Dad actually has the album (record). I grew up listening to this and have shared it with friends of mine. If you like good ol' bluegrass music, you'll love this.
