When people think of Chicago's current soul music scene, they are quick to reference R. Kelly and Kanye West, two of the biggest names in urban music today. However, the Windy City is harboring an abundance of undiscovered soul talent that will soon be recognized worldwide. The Chicago Soul Sessions is a collection of soul, funk and jazz featuring an outstanding line-up of Chicago's underground artists.
Cherisse is a vocalist, songwriter, actress and poet who possesses a sultry tone that is reflected in her style of music, which is a fusion of jazz, soul, and gospel. She has been compared to artists like Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, Kim Burrell and Oleta Adams. Her internationally-acclaimed CD, "Moans" presents a mixture of vocals and poetry and shows her diversity as an artist ability to excel in different genres.
Kevin Chandler is an "artist of uncompromising quality, spirit and energy. A truly original artist, writer and producer. He has written for and worked with many local and national talents including Cristina (IndaSoul) Alfonzo Hunter (EMI), Brian Culbertson, Commissioned, DeTour, Tamborelli and Bass X. Kevin's critically acclaimed CD pSOUL pSYCHADELICA has been described as a masterpiece that ranks up there along with the best works of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway.
The McKenzie Burns Project is the pairing of songwriters and producers Stewart McKenzie and David Burns. Their self-titled debut CD garnered rave reviews for effortlessly melding contemporary jazz, Latin, hip-hop and smooth R&B into a Nu Soul soundtrack.
Chester Gregory is "a step beyond neo-soul" (Chicago Tribune), "he is a superstar in the making" (Dean Richards, WGN-Chicago). He has captivated audiences around the country with his five-octave vocal range and an unparalleled dance style, which has drawn comparisons to Prince, Tonex, Usher and the late Jackie Wilson - for which he has won numerous awards and rave reviews for his portrayal. Currently, he is in Hairspray on Broadway, the Tony Award-winning musical in which he plays one of the principal characters, Seaweed.
Kaialexander is not only an accomplished musician, but he is also an adept composer, arranger, producer, and performer; a true virtuoso with enormous talent. His style fuses Funk, R&B, Rock, Hip-Hop, and Soul. He has played and toured with Omar and also played on remixes for TLC, 702 and Maxi Priest.
Teddy Austin is a songwriter, vocalist, producer who now spends most of his time producing in Atlanta. He blesses the CD with his gospel roots. Teddy's grooves are infectious and his powerful lyrics prove that you don't have to say much to mean a lot.

Pleasure to listen to this collection of soul, funk and jazz

Each artist performs two tracks on this excellent album. It's a pleasure to listen to this collection of soul, funk and jazz by Chicago's underground artists. The deep dark voice of Cherisse, the amazing vocals of Chester Gregory and the infectious funk of Teddy Austin-he must be a fan of AL Jarreau- are a blessing to the ear. And there's more to come! The hot soulful bossa nova track "Brazilian Love Affair" from the McKenzie Burns Project and the sizzling soul from the Kevin Chandler Band in "Gilding The Lily" will give you a sweet sensation. You'll also enjoy the instrumentals from Kaialexander.(TA)

This twelve-track collection is a quality mix of funk, jazz, soul and so much more. The CD opens with neo-soul singer Cherisse. She is an expressive, sensuous vocalist whose poetic music fuses gospel with jazz and soul. A steady beat is the undercurrent of her song as waves of innovative keys and Cherisse rich vocals flow to the top of the mix. The CD also includes Kevin Chandler who is a singer, songwriter and producer. Kevin's compositions magically blend melody and rhythm in inventive arrangements. Kevin has a stunning voice and range to convey his compelling lyrics. The McKenzie Burns Project is a dynamic group that crafts modern jazz with spicy world flavors. Both 'Judging You' and 'Brazilian Love Affair' are prime example of their dramatic, soulful flair and their use of varied moods and tempos. They also harmonize well. Kaialexander is a keyboardist, producer and singer as well as a graduate of Berklee College of Music. He sites gospel as his musical roots but his songs incorporates modern beats with creative instrumentation. Teddy is also a versatile vocalist who sings from the heart. It amazes me that artist like the ones featured here can go unnoticed for so long. Hopefully Listen Up Records will give them the exposure they deserve.I also hope that people in Chicago realize that there is A LOT more than R.Kelly to be desired and appreciated!! Buy this CD and see what I mean!!

It is a quality mix of some up and coming artist with a sincerity and romantic seduction that can not be found on your local radio station. It is the perfect companion to go with a nice wine, a couple candles and a special lady that is can appreciate the mood that is being set.
Very nice jazzy soul compilation

Perfect for a night drive, it includes soul and smooth jazz cuts by a number of Chicago's best underground soul acts, including noteworthy performances by Cherisse ("I Can't Make You Be A Man"), Kevin Chandler Band ("Gilding the Lilly"), McKenzie Burns Project ("Judging You"), Kaialexander ("Too Kold"), Teddy Austin ("Under Stand") and Chester Gregory (the great Kem-like "Til U Come Back to Me"). In addition to solid instrumental performances throughout, there are a number of fine vocal performances. For lovers of soulful jazz (or jazzy soul), this is a terrific find.
