Album Notes

The chief whips are a 3 piece rock band from Leeds UK. Frontman Steve Sanderson was a member of Punk/Blues band 'The Attic' 1988-1996, whose minor successes included the infamous 'Off The Nest'EP. The band folded in 1996 and Steve played in a local covers band for a few years. He eventually began to miss the more creative side of making music and embarked on an acoustic guitar based venture with legendary local bluesman BB Tim and latterly with future Whips bassist Rich 'Sniffer' Clark.
After the positive response to an early demo, Steve and Rich decided to recruit a drummer with a view to putting a band together again and Marty Whip completed the line up in 2006. The D.I.Y approach made more achievable through access to the internet has inspired the band and they recorded 'The Other Creek' on portable tape and digital multitrack recorders at their rehearsal studio in Leeds.
Fast forward to Summer 2008 and the departure of Bassist Sniffer Clark had left The Whips in limbo. With time on their hands, but no Bassist on the horizon, despite several candidates that it didn’t gel with, Steve and Martin decided to make use of their enforced sabbatical from the gig scene.
Over the course of 3 or 4 Saturday mornings in July and August, this CD was recorded mainly live, in a converted cowshed rehearsal room. Dissatisfied with previous results using digital recording gear, they resorted to the old trusty, if, somewhat temperamental, 8 track reel to reel.
The idea behind these recordings was to make the whole thing as spontaneous as possible. Perfection was never a priority, but capturing the moment was.

Low down and dirty in the shed

The second album by The Chief Whips has a distinct Black Keys feel to it, both in terms of the production and the heavy blues stomp. More Punkier however and jam packed with distorted grungey guitar riffs. Opening track "Just Can't Help Yourself" has a kind of stop, start "Black Dog" by Led Zep vibe about it and features an innovative drum pattern. "Innocent Times" the stand out track for me, pounds along with a strong vocal melody echoing the meaty guitar riff. "All Those Tears" could have been from an early Rolling Stones album and pulls at the old heartstrings. Production throughout, (as with The Black Keys) is definitely a little bit on the lo fi side of things, but I guess this is how it was intended., another cracking album by the band and even rougher around the edges than their debut.

More please

It’s about time this lot sorted themselves out and started playing some live dates again. I came across them purely by chance and having now acquired both their c/d’s, I would recommend them to anyone who has a penchant for gutsy and raw blues rock. No excess, no frills, more please!

My type of stuff

I recieved my promo copy a month or so ago and hardly a day goes by without me giving this disc a spin. It's driving her indoors mad but I can't get enough of it. This sounds like a band that's cooking and I love what's on the menu. From the opener "Just Can't Help Yourself" to "Ain't No Hell", these boys don't let up. I particularly like "Elmore's Child", my type of rock and roll,I would love to know who it's supposed to be about though. My only gripes...I can't always make out the lyrics and why is "Baby Baby" their cover of The Vibrators classic (see their myspace site) not included on this cd. All in all though, great hard driving dirty blues rock.Nice price too,I love a bargain...times are hard! BB Tim Guzzi Club Mag.
