notes
Since quitting his job as a history teacher in 2001 to pursue a career in music, Chip Houston has accomplished things in the past few years that take many artists ten years.
With the release of his first solo album, Chasing the Dark, Houston introduces himself to the world as a seasoned veteran of the local Atlanta music scene. Houston's song "Aimless" has been featured on 99X as well as several Athen's area stations like 102.1 Magic. He has opened for a George Foreman boxing match, and performed in many renowned clubs in the Southeast --- and was seen on FOX 5's GOOD DAY ATLANTA!
This native Atlantan attributes his success to his faithful and growing fan base and to his friends and family. As a solo acoustic artist, Houston travels light, but on Chasing the Dark he shows his versatility as the leader of an incredible band. His sound is a mixture of Edwin McCain, John Mayer, James Taylor and Kenny Loggins.

"This guy can write and sing...infectious melodies...radio friendly..."
author: Christianity Today - Russ BreimeierWith a sound reminiscent of Kenny Loggins, Edwin McCain, Warren Barfield, and Wayne Kirkpatrick, Chip Houston's debut album is nothing more than straight-up acoustic pop/rock—done extremely well. It ought to be, since it reflects five years of songwriting recorded over two years. While only 10 songs (totaling 41 minutes), the quality and effort shows. Houston has been toying with the acoustic guitar since college, where he was soon performing at campus coffeehouses. He quit his job as a history teacher in 2001 to pursue a full-time music career, beginning with the local Atlanta music scene and expanding into the Southeastern states. Let's hope quitting his day job pays off—this guy can write and sing. Houston's infectious melodies make many of these songs radio-friendly, the strong backing band make the sound more credible, and his thoughtful lyrics (which explore themes beyond faith) keep his songs from succumbing to Christian pop formula. One minor complaint: There are painfully long fifteen-second pauses of silence between tracks. No matter—hit the skip button if you have to. Chip Houston's enjoyable brand of acoustic pop/rock is well worth the wait.
"All the songs are original and several are notable."
author: Southeast Performer Magazine - Katie KlemenchichReviewer -Katie Klemenchich Chasing is lyric driven contemporary music filled with thoughtful, spiritual visions. All the songs on Chasing are original and several are notable. Without sounding too pushy, Houston, of Decatur, manages to face his darkness while still letting his light shine. Houston's approach to spiritual themes is not overt. In fact, until a reading of the liner notes listed a few scriptures I had been under the impression that the tracks were all about relationships. Someone said his voice sounds like Tracy Chapman and the songs can be described as lyric driven, contemporary, with Christian undertones. “Can't Get Past You” features a sing along melody and catchy lyrics. “Someone You Love” sports a tight, funky bass-line and has emerged as a crowd favorite. “I Can Carry You” transports the listener to spiritual realm. One song features funky bongo drums and a jazzy feel with the supportive line, “hope is where you are.” The album took a few spins before it felt right and I was initially under the impression that many of the tunes sounded the same (a common complaint of singer songwriters), but I quickly came to differentiate and distinguish the subtle differences and like what I heard. Fans of Houston will likely be pleased with Houston's first effort. Contact: www.chiphouston.com

"....explodes with a forceful, organic bravura."
author: Minor 7thChip Houston may inspire you to wax nostalgic for the most memorable heartland rock of 1980s chart-toppers John Cougar Mellancamp, Bob Seger, and Tommy Cochrane & Red Rider. "Chasing The Dark" explodes with a forceful, organic bravura. Houston's warm acoustic guitar sits front and center, and every chord, lyric, and melody his crack studio posse purvey are strongly stated and slickly rendered. And Houston's resonant baritone is the perfect vehicle to cut loose on songs which detail love, loss, redemption, and hope. The syrupy word-play of "I Can Carry You" is the melodramatic stuff of Dr. Phil, especially during the acapella coda when our hero bears the burden of his woman's sensitivity sans accompaniment. The arpeggios, power-chords, and soaring harmonies of "Can't Get Past You" emerge as the disc's strongest bid for a hit song, as the Hammond B-3 affords a soulful vibe punctuated by a frenetic electric guitar solo which unexpectedly fades. World-beat poly-rhythms coupled with jazzy guitar textures fuel "Alli's Song," a seductive tale of long distance yearning. Consistently engaging, Houston undoubtedly has a bright future. © Tom Semioli
"...a soulful voice...a delicate mood..."
author: Cutting EdgeChip has surrounded himself with musicians of like vision and has created a seamless, well crafted opus that comes together with sincerity and warmth. Chasing The Dark could easily sit next to ‘70s-era Loggins and Messina meets Seals and Croft. The songs leave a memorable impression with slick hooks, Beach Boy harmonies and personally honed lyrics. Standouts include “Written On My Heart”, “Take My Breath Away” and “Fall Into My Arms” which coax a delicate mood with Houston’s acoustic playing and soulful voice. When the band plugs in the songs take on a life of their own. Lead track “Can’t Get Past You”, “Aimless” and even percussion-driven “Alli’s Song” harken back to early ‘90s – rich with melody and class. The record has universal appeal with a positive message and lasting impact. To borrow from the records liner notes: “Let this keep you while you fall asleep.”
A very mature debut...optimistic, up-beat and catchy songs...
author: NikkiDidoA very mature debut release from the Ex-Teacher turned musician, it's an album full of optimistic, up-beat and catchy songs. His career has grown at an incredible rate over the past few years with Chip notching up countless interviews, gigs and obscure appearances including opening for George Foreman at a boxing match. With a debut release like this I see things looking even more rosey future for this Atlantan troubadour.
"...The quality is here...
author: Reviewed4u - UKChip Houston has spent the last five years of his life dedicated to his music and on first play of "Chasing the Dark", you can tell that this is a guy that's really into what he's doing. The album is good solid easy going rock, with lots of great acoustic guitar work wrapped up with a pop edge. There's no denying that the quality is here with the material on this album, not to mention great vocals and lyrics.
Chip Houston chases the dark away...
author: Smother.net...with his acoustic guitar and indie/college feel. But really he fits in more nicely with his adult contemporaries like James Taylor or Kenny Loggins but hey doesn’t that kind of describe John Mayer? I like it and I wish I had had more ex-history teachers like him when I was in school.
Thoughtful and sophisticated
author: The Musik Maker...a little more serious than most of today's pop stars, but Houston's thoughtful, artistic persona adds a level of mystery and sophistication that fans are sure to find irresistible.
Pleasant and catchy
author: FlagpolePleasant and catchy, his tunes have an almost insidious way of sticking with you throughout the day.
