Album Notes

Portland, Maine-based musician Chip Means writes listenable folk rock that pays tribute to his major influences, most notably the Beatles. In addition to his pop sensibility, Means has a taste for the brooding ballad, as crafted by predecessors Elliott Smith and Mark Kozelek.

In the wake of his role in several bands and collaborative projects, Means created his solo debut, "Come Home." A multi-instrumentalist, he is the only musician present for the album's 11 original tracks.

Recorded at home employing barebones techniques, "Come Home" moves between the catchy ("Dossier", "Camping In Your Heart") and the forlorn ("You've Never Been Thrown Away", "Song of Mine"). The album also features the occasional break from such compositions, as its minimalist title track allows the instruments to repeat the titular request.

A native of Essex, Massachusetts and former resident of Portland, Oregon, Means attended Bates College and works as a freelance writer. The songs on Come Home were written in both Portlands and in Galway, Ireland.

REVIEWS

A listener's page turner
author: Chapin Moore
This is a terrific album - A novel of an album - you find yourself awaiting to see what happens with each turn of the track! The haunting "Invert," and heart wretching "You've Never Been Throw Away," are the perfect soundtrack to rocky times, while "Pass You By" and "Camping... " brings you glee. His gifted guitar solos with subtle percussion and harmonies make a wooden sound, while "The Mild Rover" will transport you on a journey. Any fall or winter drive will be complete with this album playing, be sure to bring it!

I cannot decide which song I like the best. Camping In Your Heart is one of the sweetest love songs, catchy and it stays with me all day. Dossier is introspective and haunting. You've Never Been Thrown Away is honest and filled with angst. The album is technically interesting and a good mix of ideas. Overall this cd is a find and I look forward to hearing more from Chip Means.
