ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Chip Mergott is one of my favorite songwriters." Bonnie Raitt
Twenty years ago, when Chip was living alone on a farm, tending a flock of sheep and recovering from a drinking problem, he wrote this album. Then life intervened, he got married, had a son, wrote more songs and recorded more albums, but "I Love to Tell the Story" stayed in his mind- and heart. Ultimately he decided that recording it on an old 4 track cassette recorder (like Springsteen did with his classic "Nebraska") would make it sound like an old record, and mirror the image he had in his mind of an old black and white photograph. "There's no place to hide on a cassette recorder- the songs and performances are either there or they're not." Yes, there's some tape hiss and a few anomalies of analog recording but according to Chip "This is the album I've long dreamed of making." If you're looking for a pristine digital recording this might not be for you.

"I Love To Tell The Story" Review
Chip Mergott's "I Love To Tell The Story" is a deeply introspective CD. It is beautifully written, performed and recorded, as is always the case with Chip's work. Interestingly, this one was done on a 4-track recorder, and it stands up to anything else you can listen to! Chip's voice is still mellow and creamy, but right on the money with every note. The guitar and keyboard playing is note-on, as always. Chip underestimates himself! I think that this CD is a great addition to the body of his work. A great start or addition to your collection of his CDs!
