Wide Awake - A Celebration
author: David Dempster
At its essence, Chip Murray's new album"Wide Awake" is a celebration of life. That is not to say that Murray does not deal with some of the most painful human experiences: loneliness, lost love, political corruption, financial hardship, war and suicide. They are all there and he addresses them so powerfully and with such honesty that you feel as if you are suffering with him. But just when he has you teetering on the edge of despair, he pulls you back with a soaring melody and chorus, or with a gentle reminder that you are not alone, or the simple truth that, whatever happens along its path, life has to be lived. So get on with it. Murray "owns" these songs in every sense of the word. He can and does deliver them almost as effectively with just his Gibson and harp. But on "Wide Awake" he has skilfull accompanists who add color and dimension. They walk amiably by his side and, on some tracks, run with him sure-footedly, but never stand on his toes. The album reminds us that we live in troubled times, but no more so than our fathers and forefathers, who sem never to be far from Murray's thoughts. On "Wide Awake" Chip Murray celebrates "independence Day" but he does much more than that; he celebrates Life.
