A drummer in the early Punk scene in San Francisco (1977-1981) Chris Coon played with bands that paved the way for the Bay Area movement: Impatient Youth, The Sleepers, The Woundz, Clocks of Paradise and No Alternative among others. In 1983 he entered a new underground: studying New Music composition with avant-garde trombonist Vinko Globakar, tabla with acclaimed drum master Pandit Taranath Rao, and electronic music with innovator Morton Subotnick and Barry Schrader at Cal-Arts. Chris Coon scored music for Los Angeles choreographer and performance artist Rika Ohara and has performed with media poet Heather Haley and Canadian indie songwriter Julie Vik.
His new CD "License to Depart" captures a feeling provoked by meditating on mythical themes - the journeys of Odysseus, the Labyrinth of the Minotaur - and a pervading sense of who we are.
