Album Notes

On After the Apocalypse, singer/songwriter Chris Ellis reprises the arc of lost innocence - from disappointment and despair through ennui and eventual rebirth.

"I'm a cynical romantic," Chris says of his quixotic outlook.

After knocking around in six states, a three-year stint in Nashville reenergized Chris's music. "I met some very generous and talented musicians there," he says.

Backed by accomplished Nashville session players, including guitarist/producer Jim Gibson, After the Apocalypse showcases Ellis's folk, rock, pop and country sensibilities.

"My influences are as diverse as the places I've lived. Pittsburgh, Louisiana, Houston, New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Nashville. But I don't consciously emulate any one," says Ellis.

After the Apocalypse combines Chris's influences in ten songs that become more involving and more resonant the more you listen, eventually revealing more answers than questions.

I know Chris Ellis. I have worked with Chris Ellis. And believe me....you have got to hear Chris Ellis for yourself. A truley gifted songwriter. His words paint the picture and tell the story. His melodies will haunt you. His soulful vocals provide that angst that is missing in so much of todays music. This CD is a must have for your collection. I have two copies ...so I can listen to it in stereo!

Great CD with insightful lyrics, sung with feeling.

"After the Apocalypse" is a song cycle about love and loss, and it has some of the deepest, most insightful lyrics I've heard on a contemprary recording. The songs draw on a variety of styles -- folk, rock, and even country -- but are most reminiscent of the thoughtful ballads of '60s icons such as Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. A wonderful gift for anyone who likes intelligent, beautiful music.

Great voice, cynical-romantic lyrics, sounds better every time

If you crossed Warren Zevon with Gordon Lightfoot by way of Jackson Browne, you'd....be arrested. But on After the Apocalypse, Chris Ellis's rich voice and cynical-romantic lyrics evoke all these artists. And a whole lot more. Like my favorite albums of the '70s, this disc has a mellow pop/country/California feel. The Nashville sidemen are obviously having a great time along with Chris. After the Apocalypse gets better every time I play it.

Great lyrics, engaging melodies & a mixture of musical styles!

I highly recommend this debut CD from Chris Ellis, which is about as difficult to categorize as it is to turn off. With its provocative and timely title, After the Apocalypse betrays the artists influences -- pop, rock, and even country -- as the singer/songwriter goes from bad boy, to victim, to sage in this ten song compilation. After the Apocalypse is multifaceted, deep, and eclectic -- a welcome surprise for a first album -- and will appeal to everyone who appreciates meaningful lyrics, engaging melodies, and a mixture of musical styles.
