CHRIS MATHEOS: Hard Edged New York Fusion
Bassist Chris Matheos' CD "Universal Fusion" is a compilaion of his releases from his Network Pacific Records years. Tracks were originally released on his cd's: Full Moon/High Tide (2008), Magnetic Flux (2007), Another Fall Canvas (2006), and some sampler Cd's (all out of print and hard to find used etc). This is a powerful collection of hard hitting New York City style Fusion. Fans of Tribal tech & Allan holdsworth will love this collection. Matheos features guitarists: Craig S. Snyder, Mike Ernst, & Fred Garantab, all New York aces. Matheos also features drummers: Michael Lauren, Jim Linsner, Greg Gascon, & Andy Witt. Percussionist Randy Crafton is featured on the opening track. An all star band as usual, but lets talk about the bass playing. Matheos' solos mix his usual blend of blazing fingerstyle chops with his percussive slap technique. He reminds me of Jeff Berlin in his prime with his fingerstyle playing but with more interesting and creative ideas (no goofey anthems here). Matheos remains a slap bass master on the tracks "In Patient" and "CarpShoot" (Whatever that is)?? Matheos is a under rated bass monster with his solos, grooves, and cutting edge songwriting. I'd give this CD 5 stars, but the production quality varies tune to tune. Then again it's nice to hear some real live fusion that has not been doctored up and over dubbed like a pop cd. This cd is a must for fans of GREAT BASS PLAYING!! PS-It's one of Matheos' best works, but not quite as good as his "Solo Bass & Duets" CD...
